Phew! Not exactly a 'fun' read, but certainly engrossing, with third act high octane shenanigans that would make Hollywood proud. I continue to love the character of Virgil Flowers and how he goes about solving mysteries and associated problems in this series, even if this book in particular dealt with REALLY rough subject matter. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality The writing really kept the pace taught, the bad guys and the good guys both meticulously plotting out how to achieve their desired outcomes, Flowers et al methodically working leads and getting at the truth. It's a higher quality suspense when you get moments of matching wits. All the more satisfying when good triumphs. 2/? 2y

Robotswithpersonality I appreciate how entries in this series always manage to have a low stakes running joke or two throughout the narrative, a breather from the tension.
If by any chance you find yourself in an urban, temperate area in mid-February, nostalgic for real, rural winter atmosphere, this will cure you of the rosy remembrance by detailing the snow and the cold. 3/? 2y

Robotswithpersonality It glances the territory of moralizing/denigrating anything outside 'vanilla' sex, but mainly focuses on non-consensual/coerced acts where the character's and reader's abhorrence is shared. Might just be Midwestern values of the author muddying the waters between unconventional and perverse, but it's worth saying: polygamy, group sex, BDSM elements are not, in and of themselves, a wrongdoing, when safe, sane and between consenting adults. 4/4 2y

This was so dark you guys, but so so good. It may be my favorite “Effin” Flowers book yet. Trigger warnings for child sexual abuse though. It‘s not too detailed but it‘s there and stretches back years and years. I‘m ready for a Lucas book next, Buried Prey but I‘m taking a break and reading something lighter next. #24b4Monday 10.5 hours in. @Andrew65 @SumisBooks @jb72

CocoReads Someone clued me in to read them in tandem because they pop up in each other‘s books. I think the first Virgil book takes place between Invisible Prey and Phantom Prey so that‘s what I‘m doing this time around. But after I read Buried Prey, all the Lucas books will be new to me. 5y

Andrew65 @CocoReads 🤣 If you‘re like me I want to read so much at the weekend but after a normal week of work I‘m so tired Friday night and on Saturday which affects how much I can read. Like you I like a good range of books to choose from. (edited) 5y
