Lost in the Beehive: A Novel | Michele Young-Stone

From the author of Above Us Only Sky and The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors, a touching new novel set in the 1960s about the power of friendship, love, and accepting your past in order to find a future. For nearly her entire life, Gloria Ricci has been followed by bees. Theyre there when her mother loses twin children; when she first meets a neighborhood girl named Isabel, who brings out feelings in her that she knows she shouldnt have; and when her parents, desperate to help her, bring her to the Belmont Institute, whose glossy brochures promise healing and peace. She tells no one, but their hum follows her as she struggles to survive against the Institutes cold and damaging methods, as she meets an outspoken and unapologetic fellow patient named Sheffield Schoeffler, and as they run away, toward the freewheeling and accepting glow of 1960s Greenwich Village, where they create their own kind of family among the artists and wanderers who frequent the jazz bars and side streets. As Gloria tries to outrun her past, experiencing profound loveand lossand encountering a host of unlikely characters, including her Uncle Eddie, a hard-drinking former boyfriend of her mothers, to Madame Zelda, a Coney Island fortune teller, and Jacob, the man she eventually marries but whose dark side threatens to bring disaster, the bees remain. Its only when she needs them most that Gloria discovers why theyre there. Moving from the suburbs of New Jersey to the streets of New York to the swamps of North Carolina and back again, Lost in the Beehive is a poignant novel about the moments that teach us, the places that shape us, and the people who change us.

So I'm in part 2 and I am so emotional. Not sure how to feel about Jacob and his impact on Gloria's life. #Summersendreadathon

"It's no good being alive if you don't get to live." This quote spoke to me on so many levels. There have been so many times in my life that I have just been doing the day to day routine. But when you actually get to live life for the moment and make those special memories, life is so much more. Memories are worth more than just living. #Summersendreadathon

"I've been taking care of myself." This quote spoke to me so much. After my husband died in 2016, my own sorrows caused me to retract to my one internal isolation. Not realizing the impact it had on my 17 year old son at the time. Now I have so many regrets because I know he felt like the character in this book. Alone and forgotten as I dealt with my own sorrows. #Summersendreadathon

So far I have only gotten to chapter 6. It is very good and has grabbed my attention. Saldy life happens and my 20 month old demands my attention more than my book. Lol #Summersendreadathon

Today dropped my husband off at an appointment in area of our city that we normally don't go.
Found a locally owned bookstore and decided explore.
Forgot to unmute my phone, got distracted by all the books, forgot about husband by time remembered him had 6 texts and 5 calls 40 minutes to come get him.
Took a chance based on "for lovers of" and ??? it was a book on my TBR list.
So I had a great outing.. Hubs is annoyed but he'll recover.

I basically devoured this novel, centered around a young girl who gets sent to a gay conversion camp in the '60s. The characters all lifted off the page, and I felt truly invested in the action of the plot. The best part for me was the magical realism element of a hive of bees that follows the main character throughout her life. This had just the right blend of whimsy, magic, and realism. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #NetGalley

1. I‘m obsessed with orchids. 2. Green beans. 3. I have 6 plants, five are orchids. I used to have a lovely garden in MD and I miss it. 4. Tagged book. Beehive is kind of related, right? #gardenparty @REPollock

Redwritinghood I love orchids too, but I suck at growing plants. 6y
Samplergal @Redwritinghood I‘m having success here in Florida. 6y
REPollock Oh orchids! 💙💖💜 And you‘re right, without bees, we have far fewer flowers! Thanks for meme-ing this! 6y
