San Francisco, 1915. As America teeters on the brink of world war, Charmian and her husband, famed novelist Jack London, wrestle with genius and desire, politics and marital competitiveness. Charmian longs to be viewed as an equal partner who put her own career on hold to support her husband, but Jack doesn't see it that way...until Charmian is pulled from the audience during a magic show by escape artist Harry Houdini, a man enmeshed in his own complicated marriage. Suddenly, charmed by the attention Houdini pays her and entranced by his sexual magnetism, Charmian's eyes open to a world of possibilities that could be her escape. As Charmian grapples with her urge to explore the forbidden, Jack's increasingly reckless behavior threatens her dedication. Now torn between two of history's most mysterious and charismatic figures, she must find the courage to forge her own path, even as she fears the loss of everything she holds dear.

My current read. The Jack London State Park is 1.5 hrs away so I have seen many of the locations talked about in the book. Adds to the story for me.

JSW Hello fellow CA Litten!! ❤️ I grew up going to that park for school reports!! 6y
Blueberry @JSW 🖐 Hi there! I live in Fairfield. It's a beautiful park isn't it. Have you ever done the trail from the cottage to the swimming hole? And Wolf House would have been magnificent. You should read this book. It's fictionalized but fun. I don't buy the relationship between Jack and Charmaine though. I think with their love of adventure they were made for each other. 6y
JSW @Blueberry I‘m in Santa Cruz but grew up in Richmond and went to Davis for college. Lived in Sacramento for years, too. I agree: Wolf House would have been wonderful! Such a beautiful spot. I don‘t think I‘ve done that trail but you‘ve inspired me! 6y
Blueberry @JSW I went to Davis too but probably before you. I graduated around '82 or '84, majored in Design. Small world 😄 6y
JSW @Blueberry yes 😂 I graduated 1996, majored in psychology. Go Aggies! 6y

Mehso-so

I love the concept behind this story- although I now have a total distaste for Jack London and Harry Houdini. I'm not sure the strength of her personality truly came through as she really was overshadowed by those two men. Parts of this were interesting but other times it was extremely dull too. Overall it was just meh.
