Years ago, I was browsing in a used bookstore with my husband. He discovered this first edition for $5. This novel left me feeling much the same emotions as The Crossing. There are moments of heart wrenching despair and utter sadness. McCarthy knows how to build hope for the reader, but I wasn‘t fooled this time. I knew any moments of joy or excitement were going to be met with devastating grief.

Between a Pick and a So-So, defenitely not as strong as the two other books. Which is a bit sad, since it is the conclusion of the trilogy. Maybe it's because Billy settled down? Has grown up? Who knows? I just missed the landscapes, the freedom, the journey. It is still a good book though, McCarthy is a terrific writer, and I still want to read more of him.

i rd All the pretty horses + The Crossing, both 5*, a few yrs ago and was immersed in john grady and billy Parham 's cross border stories. Why i left the final bk so long i don't know but i loved returning to their lives as grady falls in love with a woman who he shouldn't and hus friend tries to save him. The writing is poetic and brutal with a final chapter that had me anxious and distraught but an epilogue confused. Brilliant, compelling 5*

Tragic and funny, sprawling and dense – I‘m happy I finally got to read it. I especially enjoyed that low-key time jump and the meta-narrative that‘s part of the epilogue.

Having "read" the previous two parts of this trilogy as audiobooks, I will be reading the final novel in the old fashioned way. No kindle, real paper. This is what we did before internets were built and dinosaurs roamed the earth. I may exaggerate somewhat.
Oh, and the first two in the trilogy were very good. Otherwise I wouldn‘t be reading the third. Well, der!
