A Place of My Own
A Place of My Own: The Education of an Amateur Builder | Michael Pollan
5 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
At a turning point in his life, writer Michael Pollan found himself dreaming of a small wood-frame hut in the woods near his house--a place to work, but also a "shelter for daydreams." Weaving the practical with the philosophical, this book presents a captivating personal inquiry into the art of architecture, the craft of building, and the meaning of modern work. Line drawings throughout. Size C. 320 pp. National ads & publicity. 35,000 print.

Pickpick

Readers with an interest in architecture will enjoy this relatable tale crafted for the layman. It‘s shorter and not as pedantic as Bryant‘s “Home.” Readers of modest origins may find the final cost per square foot off-putting, but please don‘t dismiss this as a rich man‘s idle project.

So after moving around 6 times in the last 10 years and about 20 different roommates, I'm happy to say I finally finally have a place of my own! I moved in back in January but I didn't unpack my books until tonight. Theres something about being surrounded by my book collection that makes my teeny tiny little studio feel just like home 🤗

CaliforniaCay @Freespirit yes it does, a huge relief 😌 6y
CaliforniaCay @RadicalReader thanks, it's basically one long shelf, and without any bookends it just made sense to use stacked hardcovers in between upright paperbacks 6y
SW-T Congratulations! 😊😊😊 6y
CaliforniaCay @SW-T thanks! 6y
Blueberry Your books weren't unpacked 😲. No wonder you were feeling the blues! Seriously, I hope you are feeling better. 6y
CaliforniaCay @Blueberry thanks I really am feeling a lot better. I think that was part of it though. I moved I to a much smaller space then I'm used to, a lot of my stuff is still in storage, I haven't really decorated or anything so it hasn't really felt like my place yet. Unpacking my books has definitely helped a bit. 6y
Leftcoastzen Love this post ! I have lived in small places too but having the books out around you is the best feeling for readers. 6y
hlgreenfield Congrats on getting a place of your own! I definitely understand how you feel, I moved a few months ago, but only got shelves a few weeks ago and only now that I have my books out does it feel like home! 6y
CaliforniaCay @Leftcoastzen and @hlgreenfield Thanks! I've still been slowly but surely making my new place feel more like a home, but the books were definitely a good start. And Helena congrats to you too on the recent move 🤗 6y
CaliforniaCay @hlgreenfield I have something to mail to you, but I just realized you said you moved. Can you email me your new address please? and thank you! 🤗 6y
hlgreenfield Oh I still receive mail at the old address! It's my parents house and the mail at my new place hasn't been arriving properly so I don't use it for now! But please email me your new address :)) 6y
CaliforniaCay @hlgreenfield perfect! Just dropped it in the mail today, addressed from my new address 6y

Reading this thing in a 1950's airstream! Kind of appropriate.
