Unspoken (The Lynburn Legacy Book 1) | Sarah Rees Brennan
20 posts | 48 read | 43 to read
A modern, magical twist on the Gothic Romance and Girl Detective genres, this book will appeal to fans of both Beautiful Creatures and the Mortal Instruments series. Reviewers have praised the take-charge heroine and the spellbinding romance.Bound together. Worlds apart.Kami Glass is in love with someone she's never meta boy she's talked to in her head since she was born. This has made her an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale, but she has learned ways to turn that to her advantage. Her life seems to be in order, until disturbing events begin to occur. There has been screaming in the woods and the manor overlooking the town has lit up for the first time in 10 years. . . . The Lynburn family, who ruled the town a generation ago and who all left without warning, have returned. Now Kami can see that the town she has known and loved all her life is hiding a multitude of secretsand a murderer. The key to it all just might be the boy in her head. The boy she thought was imaginary is real, and definitely and deliciously dangerous."A sparkling fantasy that will make you laugh and break your heart." --Cassandra Clare, New York Times bestselling author"A darkly funny, deliciously thrilling Gothic." --Kelley Armstrong, New York Times bestselling author"Readers will laugh, shiver, and maybe even swoon over this modern Gothic novel." --Melissa Marr, New York Times bestselling author"Breathtaking--a compulsive, rocketing read."--Tamora Pierce, New York Times bestselling author"Captures the reader with true magic."--Esther Friesner, author of Nobody's Princess"A laugh-out-loud delight." --Publishers WeeklyFrom the Hardcover edition.

I like this cover much better than the standard YA one. Though it's maybe a little middle-grade in feel?

Such a gut punch of a book. I both desperately want to read the next one, and am kind of afraid to. Especially since there are two more before--I can only hope--evil is vanquished and romances have happy endings.

This was my #backlistreadathon author, but I only got to the one. Still have 3 short prequels though.

#BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I really loved this series, although the first book ended up being my favorite of the trilogy. 2y
willaful @TheAromaofBooks Oh dear, that doesn't bode well. I often find that to be true of YA series though. I so often don't even finish the second book. 2y
TheAromaofBooks It's been a few years since I read these, so my memories are a little hazy haha I still really liked them, I just felt like it ended up feeling a little too YA/angsty as the series went on. Like if these are really this urgent, why are we spending SO MUCH TIME talking about feelings?? 😂 2y
willaful @TheAromaofBooks I'm in the third book and agree that the balance is off. She also doesn't write action scenes well. I still got very wrapped up in the second one and hope this gives a good ending. 1y
TheAromaofBooks I hope you enjoy the way it concludes!!! I really did enjoy the friendships and banter in this trilogy. 1y

I looked through my entire YA shelf on Goodreads and didn‘t see a single book I would consider a comedy. But Kami Glass is hilarious! #YAWednesday

TheFunkyBookworm Ohh sounds spooky! 6y
Crewgurl I need to finish this series. I enjoyed the first one! 6y

This was pretty delightful! A sassy teen girl sleuth and amateur journalist solving paranormal mysteries in a sleepy English town. I love Brennan's snarky sense of humour, especially as it appears in the BFF character Angela who loves to nap and hates everyone. Angela stole the show. My only caveat is there was a bit more that I wanted in terms of world building and character. Just more depth, I think? Also: minor gay stuff! #YA

Beachesnbooks Oo! I loved her book In Other Lands and was wondering if she had other books out there, thanks! 6y
awordandawhisper I haven‘t read this one yet but its been on my tbr for forever! Happy to know people think it‘s still good 😊 6y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Beachesnbooks Tbh, I didn't like this one as much as In Other Lands, but it was still very good! 6y

I got off my bus early to go to this great Chinese bakery called NewTown that I hardly get to now that I live farther away. So I guess BBQ and steamed pork buns are what I'm having for dinner! Salad added for health!
I'm almost done Unspoken and am very eager to find out how it ends!! Also, something I predicted is happening and I am very proud of myself.

Some thoughts:
If Angela and Holly never make out at least once over the course of this series, I will be most seriously displeased. The girls known in their school as "the prettiest girl" and "the second prettiest girl", it would be so awesome!
Also, Angela continues to kill me. When Kami tells her they should go to a pub, Angela says "Somewhere with other people? But other people bother me."

I think Angela, the main character's BFF, is my favourite. She's super lazy and loves naps. Great quote from her:
"'Why are you doing this to me?' Angela moaned. 'I knew getting out of bed today was even more of a mistake than it usually is.'"

Kami Glass is considered a weirdo in her town because she had an imaginary friend who she's always heard in her mind. Her best friend, Angela Montgomery doesn't care what others think. Their humor & relationship reminded me of my relationship with my best friend. So of course I had to give her these books. #uncannyoctober #yourfictionalbestfriend

Kami Glass loves someone she‘s never met... a boy she‘s talked to in her head ever since she was born. Despite being treated like an outsider in the small English town she lives in, she runs the school newspaper and has an awesome best friend named Angela. The two of them together made me laugh so much and reminded me of my best friend. Even my husband said it felt like he was reading about the two of us as teens. #bestbuds #jubilantjuly

This one really sucked me in! It hit all my buttons: weird town with secrets, creepy family who everyone is scared of, Nancy Drew-type protagonist.

A quick library read in between weightier fare - I enjoyed this updated YA take on classic Gothic novels, with a couple of small caveats. The dialogue was fun & sassy but in no way like any British teenager I've ever heard - it jarred me a little to see Americanisms like 'Jell-O' in there too.
