This book is a great usage of poetry and creating mutual respect. They explore the journey of interracial friendships and navigating the unknown.
A poetry book all kids should get the chance to read. Includes different setting and situations to learn about boundaries and friendships
Great morals, important boundaries and more. Educational for kids to learn these things & poetry
Sky black streets black faces black fear white
Published in 2018, was a cute story about the difference between cultural families. Went in depth about Black Lives Matter and was the perfect story to learn some more about in the homes
Piano Lessons: “I play the piano in my mind all those white and black keys singing together, then resting side by side”
I love the way this poem book gives two different perspectives of similar situations, but the way they are experienced by the different children.
This book explores diversity and the different lives and perspectives of a white and a black student. The poems cover similar topics, told in the perspective of the student. Each poem tells a story and seem to follow the narrative style.
These are really great poems about friendship, diversity, and love. I really enjoyed reading some of these poems
The authors collaborated on this poetry project that asked the question, what would our poems have been like if we'd met in elementary school? The resulting collection tells the story of a Black boy and a white girl exploring their differences and learning how to learn about each other. #Poetry #PictureBook #Inclusivity
I've been waiting a long time to finally see this book. Another fantastic gift for my library.

Normally this reader is bad at reading poetry. It was worse as an audiobook. Telling where one began and one ended was not easy. Plus i think listening to it as an audio book instead of reading it, left off the emotion and made it hard to tell what was actually happening.
I was SO excited when I finally found poetry written about diversity and something that many students should learn at an early age. The famous question of “can I touch your hair” gets asked to many black children all the time. This book addresses differences between people and shows us the importance of diversity and acceptance. Absolutely loved this book! #UCFLAE3414SP20
“But it is. Charles is black, and I am white.”
I really like how blunt the book is as it states what both children think of each other and how they are scared to approach doing the project together!
Can I Touch Your Hair? By Irene Latham and Charles Waters, 2018. Charlotte Huck Award Winning Book. This book is a great way to introduce the topic of race among children. The two characters in the book share their most honest and seemingly uncomfortable thoughts on each other when they are prompted to work together on a poem. Both children‘s poems give an insight to the lives of two completely different races.
Two poets, one black and one white, share a story of life from the perspective of two different grade-schoolers. Classmates at the beginning, and friends at the end. Stories told in poetry like this one pack so much into a tiny space.
This would be a great story to share with upper grade-schoolers. The illustrations are lovely and engaging, and not not too juvenile to engage the interest of 4th and 5th graders.
