Girl Logic
Girl Logic: The Genius and the Absurdity | Iliza Shlesinger
From breakout stand-up comedian Iliza Shlesinger comes a subversively funny collection of essays and observations on a confident woman's approach to friendship, singlehood, and relationships. "Girl Logic" is Iliza's term for the way women obsess over details and situations that men don't necessarily even notice. She describes is as a characteristically female way of thinking that appears to be contradictory and circuitous but is actually a complicated and highly evolved way of looking at the world. When confronted with critical decisions about dating, sex, work, even getting dressed in the morning, Iliza argues that women will by nature consider every repercussion of every option before making a move toward what they really want. And that kind of holistic thinking can actually give women an advantage in what is still a male world. In Iliza's own words: "Understanding Girl Logic is a way of embracing both our aspirations and our contradictions. GL is the desire to be strong and vulnerable. It's wanting to be curvy, but rail thin at the same time. It's striving to kick ass in a man's world while still being loved by the women around you. "This book is also for me, because apparently expounding on a stage for two hours a night wasn't enough. (Trust me, if I could start a cult I would, but I hate the idea of deliberately dying in a group.)"

I am Iliza and Iliza is me. 😂 Honestly I connect so much with her humour, that listening to this was both hilarious and enlightening. Girl Logic, or the way our brains both help and hurt us, just aids the reader in understanding themselves. I‘m glad I followed up Burnout with this audiobook, because they both paint a similar picture of women trying to be there for everyone... except themselves.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘ve been flying through this so fast, I forgot to post about it! Iliza‘s comedy is basically my life (my friend first told me about her by saying, she‘s talking about you! 😂), and her reading the #audiobook makes this ten times more amazing.

What a great start to the new year. A book that encourages me to be me and makes me laugh.

“People always seem to blame the girl for her own romantic misfortune and they assume she‘s doomed. Is it possible that your ex-boyfriend was just shitty and you were smart enough to ditch him? Is it possible you‘re choosing to be alone for a while because you need to recover from something awful or because you like having time to do your own thing and watch a shit ton of TLC?”

Moonprismpower Also I was just listening to the most recent Fake Doctors a Real Friends podcast and there was a guy asking for life advice for finding the right girl and settling down because he‘s feeling the pressure from his family. Very interesting. 4y
CaliforniaCay I've never seen such an accurate visual to describe my lack of dating experience 😆 I feel seen, stacked! 4y
Moonprismpower @CaliforniaCay it‘s a really good book and I love her stand-up. 4y

“To me the modern equivalent of Valium is white wine. Over the past several years women‘s consumption of white wine has skyrocketed. The archetype of the wasp and her drink of choice with the funny thinly veiled underlying alcohol addiction is now a mainstay in pop culture. “

I myself have tried drinking wine and have found that coffee instead is my drink of choice. But I tried and that‘s what matters 😂😂😂.

MidnightBookGirl I'm a red wine drinker myself. But coffee is life! 4y
Moonprismpower @MidnightBookGirl agreed about the coffee. I‘m impressed with the red wine, I seem to get headaches with red and also more drunk. 🧐😅 4y

“Another damning element of constantly striving for a perfect fantasy is that we expect perfection, then mock women who fall short of it. If they get it done wrong, even slightly, they end up looking weird. Not bad necessarily just, there in the “uncanny valley”. The “uncanny valley” is a term used in robotics when an android is meant to look human and comes close but something is still off enough to make you feel uneasy.”

Moonprismpower I understand the desire to change one‘s appearance. And we have the right to do that. But yeah, it‘s definitely shitty when you get a botched surgery or overdo it to the point of weirdness. 4y
Moonprismpower And I think we do this for ourselves and for men and in celebrity cases, to stay relevant. But damn. It‘s creepy. And yes I judge. I‘d rather grow old and look old than grow old and look like plastic. Bc if celebrities with MONEY still end up with shitty doctors then who/what will I end up with? 😬 4y
Crazeedi It hurts to look at women who've done this 4y
AmyG There was a woman, mother of my daughter‘s childhood friend, who I saw a few years ago and didn‘t recognize. I never want to be the person that when others see me their first thought is....she had plastic surgery. Our society needs to respect aging...it‘s not a bad thing. (edited) 4y

“ in real life when you‘re lonely, disappointed, and burned out you find yourself in an “all is lost” moment, you know what happens? Nothing. No one saves you. Certainly not a man. There‘s only you. As Carrie points out in that sex and the city episode: “have you ever thought that maybe we are the white knights and we are the ones who have to save ourselves? “

“My handy list of clothing items that are simply never OK:

A mule. This shoe is ugly, makes you look like you have a hoof. You know what you know what sexy part that covers? Toes. You know what‘s not sexy and it exposes? Your callused crackly heel. This shoe has everything backward. “

Confession: I totally make fun of my coworkers mules a.k.a. her clogs because they‘re fucking ugly and I hate them. Does that make me a bad person?

NovelGirl82 LMAO!! No- and I loved this book and totally related to it! 4y

Not a bad read. Had some LOLs, a few A-HAs, and some Mhmms as well. Relatable, but nothing outstanding.

(Edit. I've now seen some of her comedy on Netflix, and she's quite funny. So this book might work better in audio format.)

MissAimz_55 I tend to listen to memoirs and books like this in audio format especially if read by the author. I agree with your edit that usually there are ways they read it or extra stuff they add in that makes it better or funnier 5y

Finished this really funny book by female comedian Iliza Shlesinger, paired with my snack of cornmeal blueberry muffins. Read my full review here: https://theupstairslibrary.blogspot.com #MrBook1inaMillion #LitsyPartyofOne #24B4Monday @MrBook @Rachel.Rencher @Andrew65

I got a few LOLs out of this one. I probably would have related more if I were a good decade younger. I appreciated Shlesinger's candor, especially since many of her stories are pretty damn unflattering. She says some weird stuff I can't get on board with and other stuff I was nodding my head along to. I mean, this isn't exactly the Great Feminist Manifesto. It would have worked better as either a straight memoir or flat-out comedy.

“Women aren‘t crazy. We are not crazy. We are conflicted. Crazy implies an impracticality to our thoughts when, in actuality, we are processing so many dichotomic thoughts that we get frustrated. Then others perceive that as “crazy.” Women want to be appreciated for their mind, but they won‘t stop obsessing over the size of their ass.”

There are so many things I didn‘t like about this starting with the title and cover. I‘d pick it apart, but I don‘t want to waste my time. If this had been a straight up memoir, it would‘ve been so much better.

ChamomileAndCupcakes I love her standup comedy, good to know to avoid this one though!! 6y
britt_brooke @MissMia3003 I was not familiar with her going in, so you might like it more than I did. But, it wasn‘t well-written or well-organized and was generally pretty annoying. 6y
ChamomileAndCupcakes Oh dear :/ she has 3 comedy specials on Netflix, they‘re pretty good, and I generally prefer to watch women comedians anyway. I‘d recommend having a look at her comedy :) 6y
britt_brooke @MissMia3003 I‘d be willing to try - thanks! 👍🏻 6y

I‘m sure the experience of winning Last Comic Standing as a female then being mocked by the male contestants on tour really sucked and was completely inexcusable, but it‘s NOT like military combat. I can take a joke, but this is really fucking stupid.

#LetsGetRidiculous #GetMovin

PenguinInFlight Not a good analogy at all, any way you look at it. 7y
Scurvygirl 😐 7y
britt_brooke @PenguinInFlight Right! I know I‘m touchy because my husband did 3 tours in Iraq, but still. Just asinine. (edited) 7y

ReadZenRites You‘re right, putting your ego on the line vs putting your life on the line are hardly comparable! That‘s not touchy, it‘s just real. 👍🏻 7y
SleepyDragon Yeah ... uh ... no. 7y
Cinfhen I don‘t like when comics make a really ridiculous comment/ statement and try to justify it through “comedy” ~ it‘s not funny it‘s offensive 7y
ErinGoBragh1011 My best friend was a medic and did 3 tours un the Iraq war, my grandfather fought in WWII, my father, although never went to war was in the 82nd. This bitch needs a reality check. You can't compare the two. 7y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Same here, and I‘m not easily offended. 7y
britt_brooke @ErinGoBragh1011 My husband was a helicopter pilot and went to Iraq 3 times as well. 💚 7y
ErinGoBragh1011 @britt_brooke wow! I am glad he made it home safe. I can't even begin to imagine. 7y
Anna40 Fully agree with you! 7y
britt_brooke @ErinGoBragh1011 Thanks! 💚 I got more and more into reading with each deployment. It‘s truly what got me through. He‘s been out of the army several years now. 7y
britt_brooke @Anna40 🙌🏻 7y
Trashcanman What an idiotic thing to say. Unless you've been in combat you have no idea what's its like, and how much it impacts you for the rest of your life. Believe me it never leaves, your husband knows and all of us who have. 7y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman If this had not been at nearly the end of the book, I‘d have bailed. She also made a mass shooting joke that was definitely in poor taste. None of these “jokes” have anything to do with the book and just make her look (a) stupid and (b) like an asshole. PS. Thanks for your military service. You guys do not get enough recognition. 7y
Trashcanman @britt_brooke true words. Thank you, truly. Thank your husband for me too. And you as well, so many don't ever think of the spouses. They sacrifice a lot as well. And are in constant worry, I know my wife was and I know you and all spouses were too. 7y
britt_brooke @Trashcanman Thank you for the kind words. 💚 Being a military spouse isn‘t for wimps. ☺️ 7y

Sounds interesting, and it's on sale for 2.99 today. :)

Jess7 Sometimes I like her and sometimes she annoys me. I‘ll download it though and check it out. @britt_brooke have you read this one? @TheLibrarian heads up 7y
Insightsintobooks @Jess7 I've never read anything by her, but I thought it sounded interesting. 7y
britt_brooke @Jess7 I have to be honest, I‘m not familiar with her, but this sounds like it could be entertaining, so I grabbed it. 👍🏻👍🏻 7y
Jess7 She got her start hosting a comedic type show called Girls Behaving Badly, and then later went on to get recognized in standup. She has recently hosted some gameshows too. She is funny, but sometimes she annoys me. She has Chelsea Handler-type vibes. @britt_brooke 7y
britt_brooke @Jess7 Ok, gotcha. I love (well, I used to until she got super political) Chelsea Handler, so this might be a good fit. 7y

This was a really fun listen. I laughed a lot and I thought OMG ME TOO!! so many times. Definitely recommend this to all my gal pals! It‘s very enjoyable.

My only complaint is the use of girl instead of woman but that‘s a personal issue I realize. #readwomen
