Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust
Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust | Immaculee Ilibagiza
17 posts | 20 read | 19 to read
Immaculee Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her idyllic world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into a bloody genocide. Immaculee's family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans. Incredibly, Immaculee survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them. It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculee discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her bathroom hideout having discovered the meaning of truly unconditional love--a love so strong she was able seek out and forgive her family's killers. The triumphant story of this remarkable young woman's journey through the darkness of genocide will inspire anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering, and loss.

I read this book in high school and it has stuck with me since then. Through terror and tears I made it through this book quickly. I handed it off to my aunt who then passed it around to friends and it has never stayed in a home more than a week. This book is incredible and Immaculee is the epitome of what we should all strive to be. A survivor. I can‘t even begin describe the impact she had on me through her writing.

#Rwanda holds a very special place in my heart. I have yet to read this book, but I know it will be hard, despite the fact it has been 25 years since the genocide.

#HappyIndependenceDay, Rwanda, and may you continue to grow and be a light to others.

This was an incredible story. The 1994 Rwandan genocide was such a brutal and heartbreaking event, but Ilibagiza‘s story of faith was truly amazing. I loved seeing her strong relationship with God and the resilience and forgiveness she gained because of her faith. Highly recommended!

“Never refuse any who ask you for help; if your pockets are empty, give them hope. Your every action must be born of kindness, your every word spoken with love. Live as God would have you live, and others will be inspired to do the same.”

What this woman has gone through breaks my heart. She lived through the Rwandan genocide in the 90s, but lost so many. I'm not a religious person, but I enjoyed reading how her faith in god got her through such a horrible time. #nonfiction

aizekj Omg, this book is amazing and so heartbreaking. I had to read it for my senior seminar in college and I cried so many times. 7y

This true story broke my heart. The story needs to be read and discussed in order to make sure history does not allow this to happen again!
