Solvang, the "Danish Capital of America"
Solvang, the "Danish Capital of America": A Little Bit of Denmark, Disney, Or Something Else? | Hanne Pico Larsen

I draw these conclusions. Whereas Solvang represents a themed space, embedded in the Californian tourist landscape, there exists a strong sense and pride of Danish heritage among the locals. What is presented to the tourist is a rather generic Northern European heritage providing many American visitors with a sense of belonging and nostalgia for old countries and/or old times. In turn, the exhibited Danish-ness of Solvang, the presence of somewhat stereotyped cultural makers, reinforces a sense of being Danish to locals and visitors of Danish descent. Solvang is indeed a little bit of Denmark, Disney, and something else.

I'm out traveling the state of California and this was around the corner at our hotel! Love it. Going to go explore the "Danish capital of America" tomorrow. Looking forward to lots of yummy food and a Hans Christian Anderson museum. ? #TravelsWithBooks
