I Survived the Japanese Tsunami, 2011 (I Survived #8) | Lauren Tarshis
6 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
The disaster felt around the world . . . Visiting his dad's hometown in Japan four months after his father's death would be hard enough for Ben. But one morning the pain turns to fear: first, a massive earthquake rocks the quiet coastal village, nearly toppling his uncle's house. Then the ocean waters rise and Ben and his family are swept away-and pulled apart-by a terrible tsunami. Now Ben is alone, stranded in a strange country a million miles from home. Can he fight hard enough to survive one of the most epic disasters of all time?

3✨ My ten year old niece recommended this to me. I can see how it would be popular with her age group. It is a short read and has a historic event. While this is a work of fiction it portrays the Japan tsunami along with emotion, and sounds that people would have experienced at that time. As a science teacher that teaches this I‘m not impressed on a scientific level of tsunamis, but as a story it‘s good.

Roary47 @TheAromaofBooks Yay! This was my 3 so I already got my #DoubleBookSpin 🤩 (edited) 3y

HF/New York Times Best Selling Stories/LC/The event of the Japanese Tsunami is gold by a child, Tom, who is visiting his uncle in Japan. While they were visiting they experienced an earthquake that followed the devastating tsunami. Ben had to fight to be able to survive! This HF book “ I survived” would be great for Storytelling. This book is about the Japanese Tsunami that took place in 2011. Ben is the main character in this book and is separated from his family from the terrible tsunami. Ben is now alone and must try and survive one of the most biggest natural disasters of all time.

Thayes1787 This is such a great book to do storytelling because it is interesting and keeps students on their toes while teaching them about past events that happened.
UDL 2.1 & 5 would be great to use during this book (clarifying vocabulary and symbols/ vocabulary supporting key concepts) because there will be new words that students have not hear before such as “tsunami”.

We took my daughter to the Connecticut Children's Book Fair at UCONN and heard Lauren Tarshis speak. She is the author of the I Survived series which both of my children have enjoyed. Her talk was very inspirational to the kids (and adults) in the audience as she spoke of overcoming difficulties in her early reading life and in her first attempts at writing. My daughter got a kick out of meeting her and getting a few books signed.

Lmstraubie She's a great speaker. When was the book fair?? (I'm sorry to have missed it.) 7y
Ncostell @Lmstraubie It was this past weekend. I hadn't been in years and my daughter's librarian mentioned it to her at school. She thought it was really cool to meet her and have her book signed. I'll have to remember to keep an eye out for it next fall too. 7y

This was another great entry in the I Survived series. While certain plot points seemed a bit unlikely, the story was enjoyable and made me want to keep reading to see what happens. I think this is a great series for reluctant readers who have an interest in either natural disasters or war.

awishman My 9yo is OBSESSED with this series. 7y

I Survived is a New York Time Bestselling Series. This particular book is about the Japanese Tsunami that happened in 2011. This book is HF and is seen in a lot of school today. A little boy and his family go to Japan to visit their uncle. A few days in an earthquake hits and is later followed by a tsunami. The little boy is separated from his family, but is later reunited. This helps children understand what people went through. #ucflae3414f17

MeghanW EL Strategy 4: link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. UDL Strategy 3.1: activate or supply background knowledge. It is important for students to understand the events that took place in the book. http://www.warsaw.k12.in.us/document-library/guided-reading-lesson-plans-1/level... the link is a great plan for teachers to support students in a guided reading for this book. 7y
JordanD I read "I Survived Pearl Harbor" and if this one in the series was anything like that book I'm sure it was vivid and fantastic! I like the strategies you chose- I would make sure to also have during and after activities to dive even further in! Great review! 7y
Floribelg I liked how you included the guided reading especially with a book about such important content! A book like this that relates on a personal level, definitely is meant to be any teachers library. 7y
DrSpalding Those of you that have selected to read a book in the series have provided positive feedback! Knowing that your resource came from a school district, these books are being used in schools and children are thoroughly enjoying them! This can help them get into the genre of HF and hopefully continue reading this genre as they get older! 7y
