Grain Brain
Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers | David Perlmutter
A #1 New York Times bestseller--the devastating truth about the effects of wheat, sugar, and carbs on the brain, with a 4-week plan to achieve optimum health. Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that's been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more. Dr. Perlmutter explains what happens when the brain encounters common ingredients in your daily bread and fruit bowls, why your brain thrives on fat and cholesterol, and how you can spur the growth of new brain cells at any age. He offers an in-depth look at how we can take control of our "smart genes" through specific dietary choices and lifestyle habits, demonstrating how to remedy our most feared maladies without drugs. With a revolutionary 4-week plan, GRAIN BRAIN teaches us how we can reprogram our genetic destiny for the better. GRAIN BRAIN is a #1 New York Times bestseller and a finalist for a 2013 Books for a Better Life award.

Prepandemic and for the last 3 years, I basically had bare cupboards and a 2-3 day supply of fresh foods in my home. Well that changed as I foraged for 15-day supplies of food. I decided to read this before my next 15-day shopping trip. ...Well, I‘ll now keep this book shelved with my Stephen King books because it scared the the bejeezus out of me!

Suffice it to say I am not eating as much gluten

Think there's going to be quite a few cookbooks from me for this challenge!

Not the tagged book but it is the cookbook that goes with it.

I think coeliacs are #wheatkings as they have to live without it - I can't imagine how hard it is to find suitable replacements in some countries (the UK is getting better at this).

#timbittunes @Cinfhen (you were in the middle of the predictive text this time! 😂) @TheKidUpstairs

TheKidUpstairs It's certainly gotten easier to find gluten free products, but it would still be tough to get used to! Gluten is in so many products that we don't necessarily think of. 6y
Cinfhen Waiting to be first!!!! 💋 and though I tested negative for Celiac Disease, I have a VERY low tolerance for gluten. I try to avoid but some days it‘s wayyyyyy to hard 6y
Chrissyreadit After my reaction to the flu shot I developed a crazy auto immune reaction to wheat- now when I eat it I get heavily fatigued and nausea. It has not been hard to give up, just hard to avoid because it is added unexpectedly to so many products. 6y

Cinfhen How did u figure that out @Chrissyreadit I have the same reactions to wheat, especially the nausea and I feel very bloated, like I‘m suffocating and can‘t breathe. And yes, it‘s hidden in so many items (like soup powder) that I‘m often feeling sick and I don‘t know why. Last year, the dr thought I had Hashimoto disease but it wasn‘t that either. They still can‘t figure out what I have. Although I have terrible anemia & require iron infusions. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen I was in pain all the time. Ironically the less I ate the more weight I gained. But I just felt sick from eating. I was already vegan- and a co worker suggested going off wheat. A friend suggested raw. I stopped wheat for a week, and still never felt like eating but the day I added it back was awful! Now, I still eat it occasionally but I feel so sick it‘s just not a challenge to remove. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen of course my traditional dr indicated I just ate wrong, I had to be lying and I did not exercise enough because my blood work was all borderline except for indicating an autoimmune disorder that was directly linked to my arthritis. I had gained over 100 lbs in less than a year. So I began alternative medicine- acupuncture, Chinese herbs and an American herbalist. Diet change - as in removing gluten- reduced a lot of the yuck. I still need 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen I find the cleaner I eat in general I feel better. Also, I stopped getting sick all the time. Now I just need to bypass the pain from arthritis with weight and move - but I do not use a lot of gluten substitutes. They are not healthy either. I do eat rice noodles, pasta from ancient grains and rice crackers. I just focus on more plants and beans. (Dairy makes me sick also- but that was lifelong- so easy to not eat, except again added 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen where it does not belong. Other books I love (cookbooks) are The self healing cookbook, the kind diet and an amazing couple of books for context about the American diet- so interesting- The Dorito Effect and the great Courses A Cultural Culinary History of Food - they are very interesting and informative. More about context with history and science. Not telling anyone what or how to eat. 6y
Cinfhen Thank you for all that information @Chrissyreadit I feel like you‘re describing exactly how I feel when it comes to my relationship with food. I stopped with almost all dairy too, except I will eat chocolate occasionally ~ I haven‘t had pizza, ice cream, milk or cheese in over 2 years. I‘m really curious about your arthritis and autoimmune connections because since my digestive issues have gotten worse👇🏼 6y
Cinfhen I‘ve been experiencing terrible pain in my left knee. It‘s like a stiffening or locking sensation. It‘s like my knee needs to be unscrewed and replaced. It‘s gone from occasional pain to constant. I‘m fully aware of this abnormal pain in my knee. 6y
Cinfhen My body is also always FREEZING. Like my toes, tips of my fingers, nose. I need to add layers of clothing around the house even if it‘s in the mid 60‘s outdoors @Chrissyreadit 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen actually- yes my right knee is more severe and the reason I have trouble moving. Sometimes it takes a couple hours to work the stiffness out and ibuprofen for pain. I figured it was the autoimmune acting worse. I‘ve had arthritis diagnosed when I was 16, but the past 4 years are very severe. I‘m also cold all the time. And if I get chilled my pain increases. I‘m trying to get motivation to reduce Suger (in coffee, chocolate dr.pepper) 6y
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen and begin tai chi - I have read that it could help. It has been awful because I love hiking and was a runner for 30 years. And it did not get worse until the spiral from the shot so this is far more severe. 6y
manicdirteater This book literally changed my life. Once I read it, I immediately looked for a way to eliminate grains and add healthy fats which lead me to keto. I feel better now in my 40‘s than I ever have. 💚 6y

This reading teacher is a firm believer in this stat- that's why my students have a reading contact of 20 minutes per day, but most surpass the goal🙂

hermyknee 🙌🏽 I start each class period with my kids reading self-selected books for 10 minutes. It‘s always a struggle at the beginning, but once they learn they can‘t get out of it, it goes...well? It goes well-ish. Some days it goes well, some days it just goes 😅 #teachersoflitsy (edited) 6y
Sills @hermyknee Any minutes you begin the day with us a good day🙂I miss teaching elementary sometimes😢 but I do love my 13 year olds and have the past ten years📚❤️ 6y

Very interesting! And very depressing. Despite the author‘s claims that a low carb diet can be satisfying and whatnot I remain unconvinced. This book is very geared towards American readers though, where you go and demand this and that test to be taken by your doctor. I wonder what doctors here would say to such demands. Why can‘t just exercise alone be the answer? That would be so much easier...

Whoops! This is depressing reading when you live in a country where the typical lunch is two slices of bread. (I bake all the bread we eat for lunch at work.)

After only the intro and one chapter, I'm loving the info in this book. Lots of stuff I already knew but definitely some new stuff.
