Six Months, Three Days, Five Others
Six Months, Three Days, Five Others | Charlie Jane Anders
16 posts | 11 read | 14 to read
"A master absurdist...Highly recommended." The New York Times Before the success of her debut SF-and-fantasy novel All the Birds in the Sky, Charlie Jane Anders was a rising star in SF and fantasy short fiction. Collected in a mini-book format, herefor the first time in printare six of her quirky, wry, engaging best: In "The Fermi Paradox Is Our Business Model," aliens reveal the terrible truth about how humans were createdand why we'll never discover aliens. "As Good as New" is a brilliant twist on the tale of three wishes, set after the end of the world. "Intestate" is about a family reunion in which some attendees aren't quite human anymorebut they're still family. "The Cartography of Sudden Death" demonstrates that when you try to solve a problem with time travel, you now have two problems. "Six Months, Three Days" is the story of the love affair between a man who can see the one true foreordained future, and a woman who can see all the possible futures. They're both right, and the story won the 2012 Hugo Award for Best Novelette. And "Clover," exclusively written for this collection, is a coda to All the Birds in the Sky, answering the burning question of what happened to Patricia's cat.

Every short story in this mini collection was incredible. All hits, no misses. I'm definitely going to have to read more of her short fiction now because they were all just so wonderfully absurd and inventive. Read for: aliens, genies, time travel, and talking cats.

I was in the mood for a quick something different and this little book of odd, speculative fiction fit the bill perfectly. As with all books of short stories, some rise to the top and the best is the one that reveals more about the cat from her bestselling novel All the Birds in the Sky 😸

Cool little book. About the size of a paperback but has some strong short stories in it. Now if she would just make a sequel to “All the Birds in the Sky”🤤

Started this absolutely delightful #shortfiction collection by All the Birds in the Sky author Charlie Jane Anders last night and fell asleep reading for the first time in ages because I couldn‘t bring myself to put it down. Anders has such a wonderful way with words. Looking forward reading more of this today! 📖

The neighborhood book club pick this month was a surprising choice, but exactly the kind of whimsical fun that I needed! For anyone who was a fan of Anders‘ novel, All the Birds in the Sky, one of these stories is about Berkeley the cat! 😊

Sweet little collection of short stories by the author of “All the Birds in the Sky”. I like to call her style “lighthearted dystopian”. These short stories are clever and enjoyable. Kinda like a small collection of twilight zone- esque tales. 4/5

I only recently discovered the writing of Charlie Jane Anders & boy am I glad I did. This book collects a series of stories first published on Tor.com. All of them are great but my favorite is ‘As Good As New‘ about a girl surviving the aftermath of catastrophic events hiding out in a panic room binge watching The Facts of Life. She ventures forth & that‘s when things really get going. Strange & whimsical, thought provoking & generally fantastic.

These sci fi mini hardcovers coming out on Tuesday are the best.

LauraBrook Who is the publisher? I may need to order a couple. ☺️ 7y
Waynegjr @LauraBrook TOR, of course. They really know what they're doing over there. Also, super reasonably priced. All less than a trade paperback. Check out Old Man's War and the first volume of Wildcards also. 7y
LauraBrook @Waynegjr Of course it‘s Tor. They have such great stuff! Okay, adding both to my list. Thank you! 7y
