The Acid House
The Acid House | Irvine Welsh
Irvine Welsh's scintillating, disturbing, and altogether outrageous collection of storiesthe basis for the 1998 cult movie directed by Paul McGuigan. He is called "the Scottish Celine of the 1990s" (Guardian) and "a mad, postmodern Roald Dahl" (Weekend Scotsman). Using a range of approaches from bitter realism to demented fantasy, Irvine Welsh is able to evoke the essential humanity, well hidden as it is, of his generally depraved, lazy, manipulative, and vicious characters. He specializes particularly in cosmic reversalsGod turn a hapless footballer into a fly; an acid head and a newborn infant exchange consciousnesses with sardonically unexpected resultsalways displaying a corrosive wit and a telling accuracy of language and detail. Irvine Welsh is one hilariously dangerous writer who always creates a sensation.

Still on my TBR. I found a card from my secondary school tucked into this & also the price tag on the back of the book. I bought it at Tower Records! That tells me how far back my TBR goes (1996) 😳😳 And maybe bought at the wrong age; we were up to wholesome activities like bake sales at our all-girls school 🤣

Cathythoughts 😱😂 excellent! I love it 7y
erzascarletbookgasm 👋 Assunta girl! Err, maybe such dark tales were not suitable for that age 🤷‍♀️. Hailing from a mission school for girls myself, we were all about food sales, I remember 😄 7y

batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Ooh, which one was yours? I know right, all about the food 😂 7y
Centique Oh man that‘s funny! 😂😂 Welsh would think about a whole different kind of bake sale! 7y
batsy @Centique 😆😆 7y
erzascarletbookgasm Ah, such bittersweet memories talking of my former school, which had to make way for a haute couture shopping mall. It‘s BBGS. 7y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Oh my gosh, yes 💔 And also 😡 Growing up everyone always talked about BBGS, it set the bar!! 7y
saresmoore You were such a quiet rebel! I love it! 7y
Ms_T How nostalgic! 7y
Mdargusch Love this little look back. 7y
batsy @saresmoore Aww, you made my day cos that's what I would like to think 💙 But more likely just clueless 😂🤓 7y
batsy @Ms_T 😁 7y

Smarkies You went to Assunta! So did a couple of friends of mine. 😂 7y
batsy @Smarkies Yes 😆 Sometimes our reputation precedes us and not in the best way 🙊 7y
Reviewsbylola Hahahaha that is hilarious! 1996 seems more recent than 20+ years ago. 😳😳 Maybe you‘ll read it someday. 😂 7y
Leftcoastzen Bahhh😩😭Tower Records ! Did you see the documentary about it called “All Things Must Pass”? 7y
batsy @Reviewsbylola Yes! Much better to say the actual year instead of number of years or decades 😂😂 7y
batsy @Leftcoastzen When it opened here it was the coolest thing that happened to a music-and-books-obsessed teen in Malaysia, where no cool things happen 💔 I have heard about it but haven't watched, I should find a way to do that... 7y
Leftcoastzen @batsy One of the funniest things is how Colin Hanks , who made the documentary and was raised in Sacramento, near the headquarters, bemoans the fact that they would never hire him, deemed not hip enough. 7y
emilyhaldi Whoa, Tower Records! Blast from the past! Love this 💜 7y
LeahBergen You‘ve made me feel not so bad about the ancient backlog on MY TBR. 😂😂 7y
readordierachel It's like a time capsule! 7y
batsy @emilyhaldi @ReadOrDieRachel Such a strange zap of nostalgia when I saw the price tag! Very time capsuley 😆 7y

Pickpick

Alfie seems to have found my copy of The Acid House - Irvine Welsh's collection of dark, disturbing tales of social realism within the working classes of Scotland and England.
