Kreutzer Sonata
Kreutzer Sonata | Leo Tolstoy
A man boards a train: the confined space of the carriage triggers potent memories. Soon he is confessing to a terrible crime, one for which he holds Beethovens Kreutzer Sonata responsible. Nancy Harriss English adaptation combines icy precision with mordant wit... - Charles Spencer, Daily Telegraph Nancy Harriss crisp and emotionally intelligent adaptation conveys the power of the Tolstoy original..... The experience of Harriss play is a jolt to the system, a journey into the pathology of suspicion and self-loathing - Henry Hitchings, Evening Standard An extraordinarily compelling adaptation of Tolstoys great, warped novella. - Paul Taylor, Independent Tolstoys sensational 1889 novella has been dashingly adapted by Nancy Harris she can wield a knife as precisely as Pozdynyshev. - Kate Kellaway, Observer Though this Kreutzer Sonata hews to the shape and plot of the original, Ms. Harris has given it a wry, worldly, distinctly British flavor New York

Kreutzer Sonata is a mix of different and multiple emotions: the reader gets in touch with what the main character feels and in a certain way can also sympathize with him in just a few pages. There are several modern topics such us feminism, divorce and, more interesting, the contrast between rationality and aggressiveness. Suggested for all those people who are afraid of starting reading Tolstoy.

The Kreutzer Sonata by Leo Tolstoy is to me the proof that you can fit many ideas, emotions, tension and tragedy into a novella! Also - recently I heard that people want to read Tolstoy but are quite worried about starting a book like War and Peace, so I think this novella is a great way to familiarize yourself with his work and see if it‘s right for you.

Trashcanman Family Happiness is my favorite Novella of his. 5y
MySharonaK @Trashcanman I haven‘t read but I‘ll give it a try. Have you read it in English? 5y
Trashcanman Yes I have. Can you read in Russian? 5y

This character has some great feminist views, for all that he is completely psychotic, but he draws some terrible conclusions. Woman is emancipated and given rights but still held in a form of slavery by being not just viewed as an object of pleasure, but also brought up to view herself as such. (Yeah, preach it!) The only solution is to venerate virginity and abolish sex. (Wait, what?!)

3h of nocturnal reading. First book of Tolstoj, but there are many of him on my shelf. Great novel, full of contrast specially for the author's afterword in which I felt the disagreement and restlessness of Tolstoj for the moral human conditions. What #anxiety (for me, just because is a particular period)

Yesterday was the first teacher work day post-exams and KG graduation, and today I sharpened a few hundred colored pencils with a handheld sharpener and cut a whole lot of little squares for crafts. I got a few blisters, but I finished the Kreutzer Sonata and got a good start on the Pilgrim‘s Regress! 💁🏻‍♀️

The Kreutzer Sonata shows off Tolstoy‘s super dysfunctional relationship with women more than some of his other works. Oh, Lev. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I quietly participated in the #13inthree #readathon this weekend without posting once, but I did read for 13 hours! Started and finished Ghost (3.5 hours), started and finished Cranford (7 hours), read a bit of the Hamilton Affair on my Kindle at work today (1 hour), and started the Kreutzer Sonata tonight (1.5 hours). Did some #audiostitching with parts of the three #audiobooks. Hope y‘all all had fun reading this weekend! 😊

My Highlight this month! It was really interesting. But It's not a book for everyone. The topic is maybe a bit offending. I don't have a problem with this sort of books, but maybe there are people out there who don't like it.

Short, demented, and enthralling, but I would definitely avoid this one if you are easily offended. Decidedly against my latent feminist sensibilities....almost shockingly so.
