What It's Like to Be a Dog
What It's Like to Be a Dog: And Other Adventures in Animal Neuroscience | Gregory Berns
7 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
A pathbreaking neuroscientist discovers the link between human and animal minds What is it like to be a dog? A bat? Or a dolphin? To find out, neuroscientist Gregory Berns and his team began with a radical step: they taught dogs to go into an MRI scanner--completely awake. They discovered what makes dogs individuals with varying capacities for self-control, different value systems, and a complex understanding of human speech. And dogs were just the beginning. In What It's Like to Be a Dog, Berns explores the fascinating inner lives of wild animals from dolphins and sea lions to the extinct Tasmanian tiger. Much as Silent Spring transformed how we thought about the environment, so What It's Like to Be a Dog will fundamentally reshape how we think about--and treat--animals. Groundbreaking and deeply humane, it is essential reading for animal lovers of all stripes.

Neuroscientist Gregory Berns discusses his work with dogs to allow fMRI scanning of volunteer, awake dogs. Not only does he clearly love them, but the studies and findings are really interesting. He also extends out his research and discussions to dolphins, sea lions, and thylacines (Tasmanian tiger). Bindi says it‘s very good, but is concerned too many of her secrets are being given away.

I highly recommend this book if you're at all interested in neuroscience or animals. My science background isn't the strongest, but the author does a good job of explaining what's going on when he's talking about brains. And the stories are fantastic!

About to head to central PA for a work conference, but I made sure to pack my current read! This book is too good to leave for two days.

"The similarity in brain pathology between sea lions and humans pointed toward a similarity of experience. So we now knew what it was like for a sea lion to experience domoic acid poisoning. It was the same as a human. But did analogous experiences run deeper than that?"

When this book came across my desk, I was instantly intrigued. Show me a dog lover who hasn't wondered what their dog is thinking. This book didn't strictly answer that question (blame the publisher for picking a catchy name that doesn't represent the content), but did present some fascinating science. If you're interested in the intersection between neuroscience, animal behavior and language, them this will be an interesting read.
