D'amore e ombra
D'amore e ombra | Isabel Allende

My last audiobook of 2021 was also my #AAM book for Allende and another #1001books selection.

I love Allende‘s writing style, and this one manages to be beautiful while also being sad, a little bit gross at times, and a lot bit politically terrifying.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Daisey I still have yet to read anything by Allende. I should have checked the list and used that to motivate me in December. 3y

A beautifully written and powerful book, Isabel evokes the atmosphere of the strife due to govt takeovers and brutal dictatorships in South America. The MC (a journalist) and her counterpart try to uncover the harsh truths of innocent persons who have “disappeared“… I believe there is a film based on it-has anyone watched it??

mrp27 This is one of my favorite Allende books. I saw the movie years ago, I hardly remember it. I think Jennifer Connelly played the mc and overall it was ok. 3y

It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a truly GOOD book and this is one for the shelves. It‘s my first time reading Isabel Allende and her writing is gorgeous. Reminds me a bit of G.G. Marquez but more romantic I think. The plot is straightforward enough but where she excels are characters! They‘re so alive. The themes of poverty, corruption and extrajudicial killings in the background of a love story make it so relatable. Highly recommended!

Starting my May #bookspin book today. I think I'm only going to get one read this month. I needed to finish my bookclub book first.

I've been missing from Litsy for awhile but I've been happily reading. Going to try to catch up my book reviews.

Oh boy this movie of Allende's book does not do it justice, they tried but really fell short. Antonio and Jennifer were fine in the lead roles but the dialogue, not so good. I think you can skip this one unless you like cheesy romance.

My second Allende book and she does not disappoint. I love the themes of her books; historical fiction, magical realism, strong female characters, family relationships and politics. “People must live in a united world where all man's races, tongues, customs, and dreams are one. Nationalism is an insult to reason. It doesn't benefit people in any way. It merely serves as an excuse for committing the most outrageous abuses.” #1001books

Victoria_Clyne @Joanne1 I have no good answer for this. I'm yet to read a Philippa Gregory. So many wonderful books, so little reading time. 5y

My first Allende, but not my last I hope. I'd heard that she's fond of character backstories and that was definitely the case for this. It provides a rich background of the families of three main characters, but it was never boring because everyone is so fascinating. And what little forward motion there is excites: political subversion during Pinochet's brutal reign in Chile, with a slow brewing romance, and even a possession for good measure.

Suet624 I‘ve read a number of hers, but not this one. Stacked! 6y

Personally think this wavers between black comedy and horror, despite how it's being marketed as a magical realist romance with political leanings.

The ending was haunting enough to make up for it, but this one did not hold my attention. Suspect Irene is partially autobiographical.

Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors and although I love all her books I prefer her earlier works.

booksandsympathy I enjoyed Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia. They're the only books of hers I've read. I want to read several of her older books though. 8y
AlaMich I haven't read either of these but I adored House of the Spirits. The movie, OTOH....☹️ 8y
mrp27 @booksandsympathy I've read both those titles and I did like them, but I love all of her older stuff including House of the Spirits. Hope you get the chance to check them out and enjoy them as much as I did. 8y
