The Shiralee
The Shiralee: Popular Penguins | D'Arcy Niland
5 posts | 2 read
Everyone has their cross to bear their swag, their shiralee and for Macauley, walking across New South Wales in search of work, it is his young daughter who has to suffer his resentment at having her in tow. But then, he discovers that the ties that bind can be as much a comfort as a burden, and what he thought of as his Shiralee could be the one thing that will save him from himself. This classic Australian novel perfectly captures the spirit of the bush and the tough, resilient people of the outback.

At times emotional, other times cross! The tale of a man walking through the out back, working as and when, sleeping anywhere and encountering dubious but interesting folk. Whilst bringing his young daughter with him... the ending was brilliant!
I enjoyed it and glad ivecread it. Might be tempted By the film...

Sticking with the Aussie theme...
Chose this partly because it has hints of The Road.in it, the idea of man and child walking continuously. Also because the publisher is very local and independent. I browse their shop and attended a book spa there ☺☺☺😊😊😊

LiteraryinPA Oooh, what‘s a book spa? It sounds delightful. 4y
rachaich @LiteraryinLititz it's sublime. Two hours of chatting about books to a book seller. They then go and select books they think you'll like and you browse whilst eating cake and drinking coffee. Then you choose £50 of books to take home 😍😍😍🍰☕📖. 4y

Trying some caramel cheddar corn. Was skeptical about the combo, but it's good! 😋 As is this book so far.

booksandsympathy I don't usually eat caramel corn because it's just too sticky sweet, but I love this combo. 6y

Detach the perforated book mark from the cover? Or not?
