Mrs. Rampage lives alone, in a large house cluttered with her precious objets d'art. Her daughter is half a world away, and her niece has no time for the old lady. So Mrs. Rampage is persuaded - much against her will - to take a companion into her home: Mrs. Roach, a poor but respectable widow. As resentment mounts between the pair, a violent confrontation is inevitable when the suppressed tension finally boils over...

Aging Mrs. Rampage lives alone and is persuaded by family to take in another widow as a housemate and companion. The relationship takes a nasty turn when Mrs. Roach has her own ideas about how things should be run and a battle of wills ensues.

I‘m very much enjoying this darkly humourous story which was published in 1954 (aside from this bland “print on demand” cover, that is 😬).

Tamra Cover does not evoke 1950‘s thriller suspense. But it sounds like an entertaining read! Stacked (edited) 14mo
LeahBergen @Tamra Especially as the house in the novel is Georgian and set in London. The cover has it as a Victorian country house. Gah! 😠 14mo
merelybookish Haha cover does not yell Leah book at all. 🙂 14mo
LeahBergen @merelybookish It most certainly does not. 😆 14mo

Two aging widows are locked in a battle of nerves, and it's absolutely riveting. The sense of menace never lets up, even when you know what's going to happen -- even when it has already happened, just like Dostoevsky. Marvelous.

BookBabe Oooh, now I'm intrigued! 8y
