Soldier Boy
Soldier Boy | Keely Hutton
7 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
Soldier Boy begins with the story of Ricky Richard Anywar, abducted at age fourteen in 1989 to fight with Joseph Kony's rebel army in Uganda’s decades-long civil war. Ricky is trained, armed, and forced to fight government soldiers alongside his brutal kidnappers, but never stops dreaming of escape. The story continues twenty years later, with a fictionalized character named Samuel, representative of the thousands of child soldiers Ricky eventually helped rehabilitate as founder of the internationally acclaimed charity Friends of Orphans. Working closely with Ricky himself, debut author Keely Hutton has written an eye-opening book about a boy’s unbreakable spirit and indomitable courage in the face of unimaginable horror.

Ricky was abducted in 1989 and forced to join the LRA in #Uganda. The violence he witnessed and participated in is tough to read, but the story is well told and ultimately hopeful. Ricky‘s story alternates with the perspective of another injured child soldier about 20 years later meeting the adult Ricky who is now helping other children/teens in the same kind of situation.

A good book that brings the conflict in #Uganda and being part of the Lord's Resistance Army to life. The main character, with his brother and 3 friends, is abducted as a pre-teen and forced to be part of a brutal military movement against the government. Based on a true story, this narrative is interspersed with a fictional one of another young man who has just escaped, which I found less compelling.

I finished this audiobook in a day while on a long drive up the coast of California. Ricky Anwar‘s story of being a child soldier in Uganda‘s civil war is heartbreaking, haunting and powerful.

Excited to start this one today. This is based on a true story from a 14 year old boy that gets kidnapped and trained in Kony's army.

This may be YA, but it deserves to be on EVERY reader‘s list. Hutton weaves together the true story of one boy‘s experience as an abductee forced into The Lord‘s Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda and a fictitious, yet realistic, account of a boy who escapes. Told in alternating perspectives, each chapter will have you eager for more. GO GET THIS!!

This is what our reviewer had to say about #SoldierBoy by Keely Hutton "This book can be a little tough to read sometimes....Though if you do decide to give this book a chance, it will not disappoint. The writing is beautiful, its characters are well thought out and developed, and is a really fast read."
