pickI enjoyed this story, Xiaolu is able to convey the internal struggles of a young person, Fenfang, in Beijing. Despite life‘s obstacles, she manages to keep her strength at every step. I would have liked to have read the original version, as the author rewrote it once it was translated to English. 🤷🏻♀️ But I enjoyed reading about the blunt, sometimes somber, sometimes hopeful edges of Fenfang‘s life.
Favorite part: Heavenly Bastard in the Sky.
When you‘re feeling sick on the Fourth of July it means you get to read and no one gets to make comments about it. 😆 It‘s looking like it‘s turning into dreary weather in PA. 🥴

The book follows the life of a young woman who left her small hometown to start a new life in Beijing - to seek better fortunes, love, and discover herself. The narrative is fresh, the story told in vignettes. A decent enjoyable read depicting the contemporary Chinese life.
