20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth
20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth | Xiaolu Guo
11 posts | 15 read | 17 to read
'So I was the 6787th person in Beijing wanting to act in the film and TV industry. There were 6786 young and beautiful, or ugly and old people before me trying to get a role. I felt the competition, but compared with 1.6 billion people in China, 6786 was only the population of my village. I felt an urge to conquer this new village.' Life as a film extra in Beijing might seem hard, but Fenfang - the spirited heroine of Xiaolu Guo's new novel - won't be defeated. She has travelled 1800 miles to seek her fortune in the city, and has no desire to return to the never-ending sweet potato fields back home. Determined to live a modern life, Fenfang works as a cleaner in the Young Pioneer's movie theatre, falls in love with unsuitable men and keeps her kitchen cupboard stocked with UFO instant noodles. As Fenfang might say, Heavenly Bastard in the Sky, isn't it about time I got my lucky break? "A brave young woman negotiates Beijing life in search of love and friendship in the daring new novel by Xiaolu Guo, Orange Prize shortlisted author and 'one of China's most successful literary exports' (Guardian)

I enjoyed this story, Xiaolu is able to convey the internal struggles of a young person, Fenfang, in Beijing. Despite life‘s obstacles, she manages to keep her strength at every step. I would have liked to have read the original version, as the author rewrote it once it was translated to English. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But I enjoyed reading about the blunt, sometimes somber, sometimes hopeful edges of Fenfang‘s life.
Favorite part: Heavenly Bastard in the Sky.

When you‘re feeling sick on the Fourth of July it means you get to read and no one gets to make comments about it. 😆 It‘s looking like it‘s turning into dreary weather in PA. 🥴

Happy 4th to all who celebrate! 🎇🎆🇺🇸

The book follows the life of a young woman who left her small hometown to start a new life in Beijing - to seek better fortunes, love, and discover herself. The narrative is fresh, the story told in vignettes. A decent enjoyable read depicting the contemporary Chinese life.

Told in a series of vignettes, each chapter focuses on different ponderings of a young Chinese woman living in Beijing. A young woman leaves the monotonous life of a remote village, armed with stubbornness and a headful of dreams, to make it big in the metropolitan city. The narrative is #raw and bold, capturing life in modern China.

I tried a new subscription called BookVoyage. This is my first box. Every month you get a book and goodies from a different country. Really pleased with it! This month is China and a woman author for #WomenInTranslation month! Chinese tea and sweets that were suggested by Chinese fans: Haw Flakes, White Rabbit and Rice Fruit Cake! 💕 #BookMail

An unconventional novel, where each chapter is a fragmentary account of the protagonist's life in Beijing to seek a better life. The writing is atmospheric; the protagonist's voice is bracing and raw; the novel is funny and melancholy. A glimpse into the bustling life of China's younger generation.

TheWordJar It's been a few years since I read this book, but Fenfang has stuck with me after all this time. A great read! 8y

A brave young woman negotiates Beijing life in search of love and friendship. It exudes a fragile arrogance of youth itself; a very refreshing and different read for me. Enjoying it so far.
