Ostrich: A Novel | Matt Greene

A brilliant and moving coming-of-age story in the tradition of Wonder by R. J. Palacio and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddonthis debut novel is written with tremendous humor and charm. This is Alexs story. But he doesnt know exactly what its about yet, so you probably shouldnt either. Instead, here are some things that its sort of about (but not really): Its sort of (but not really) about brain surgery. Its sort of (but not really) about a hamster named Jaws 2 (after the original Jaws (who died), not the movie Jaws 2). Its sort of (but actually quite a lot) about Alexs parents. Its sort of (but not really) about feeling ostrichized (which is a better word for excluded (because ostriches cant fly so they often feel left out)). Its sort of (but not really (but actually, the more you think about it, kind of a lot)) about empathy (which is like sympathy only better), and also love and trust and fate and time and quantum mechanics and friendship and exams and growing up. And its also sort of about courage. Because sometimes it actually takes quite a lot of it to bury your head in the sand. Praise for Ostrich Irresistible! Ostrich is loaded with wit, charm, and wisdom. Alex is one of the sweetest and most inspiring narrators Ive ever encountered. I dare you not to laugh, cry, and fall utterly in love.Maria Semple, New York Times bestselling author of Whered You Go, Bernadette? A coming-of-age story of some brilliance . . . I laughed heartily, sobbed unexpectedly, and significantly improved my grammar.Nathan Filer, author of the Costa Book Award winner The Shock of the Fall One of the bravest novels Ive read in a very long time. Matt Greene lets the reader become detective, and clue by clue we uncover not only the truth of Alexs world, but the deepest truths of what it means to love and lose.Carol Rifka Brunt, author of Tell the Wolves Im Home Ostrich has given me the most enjoyable reading experience Ive had all year and has one of the funniest and most engaging young narrators Ive had the pleasure of reading. Matt Greene is seriously funny and in Ostrich proves comedy can be the finest of arts.Matt Haig, author of The Humans From the Trade Paperback edition.

Read on this recommendation...but now I understand why it was at the Dollar Tree. Finished it, still with no idea what it was actually about 🤷‍♀️ #DisappointingRead

This is summer book club‘s August book. Anyone here read it? It‘s definitely offbeat so far.

Pickpick

Bittersweet and cleverly done. The ending is a bit abrupt. I would say read in a couple of sittings. I took a bit too long to read this one. Alex, the 13 yo protagonist is precocious and likable. Def a few chuckles in this book. 3.5⭐️ tough book to rate.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Certain passages in this book were profound. I think maybe I‘m not clever enough to get the full gist of it all. I may have underrated this book due to ignorance on my part. I‘m not sure. 7y

Started Ostrich last night. Anything blurbed by Matt Haig has to be good! Xena enjoying the little bit of sunshine we have- the geranium blooming is at least hopeful! Bring.Spring.Now.🌼

MicheleinPhilly I‘ve resigned myself to the idea that we‘re just going to move straight into summer. No warning, no gradual easing. It‘s just going to go from 45 to 95 in a week. 😒 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @MicheleinPhilly I agree, it seems for the Northeast there is no Fall or Spring anymore🙁 7y
Beckys_Books @MicheleinPhilly i fear the same for Missouri. Snow yesterday! 7y

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Beckys_Books ughh, we‘re supposed to get a wintry mix tonight, which, for a minute, was called snain in the 80s...lol..guess it never caught on. (edited) 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I do miss the 80s, at least we had seasons, and if that didn‘t work, the big hair kept you warm. Hahahahahaha 7y
MemoirsForMe Awww Xena! 😻She must be named after our favorite Warrior Princess. 🙌🏻 7y
MinDea She looks a little like my Chloe! #TuxedoKittiesOfLitsy 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I was just thinking Leigh Bardugo should write a book on Xena!! I still have to read Wonder Woman Warbringer! 7y
MemoirsForMe Oh, I'd definitely read it. 😁Leigh's gotta be a Xena fan too! 7y

I'm child free on a day off with no agenda for maybe the second time in 2 and a half years, I've painted my nails, the house is reasonably tidy and I'm taking some me time, soaking up the November sun on my lovely bed and just about to start this one!
