So far, so good!
a story about bravery, hope and intrigue? This is about the daughter of a man with multiple wives who lives a simple life. As her 18th birthday approaches, she is expected to follow in the footsteps of those around her and become the fourth wife of a man twice her age. It‘s a life of strict, quiet, unfair servitude. But Hanna has a spark in her, one that lights a revelation: there may be another path, if she‘s brave enough to take it.
I have such mixed feelings about this book. The premise was great and the writing was good. But the ending just fell so flat that it ruined the whole book.
Because sometimes you have to flee your house (and MIL) and read in a sun drenched nook at the library before work.
Oh I can already tell this book is going to enrage me! Men get to stand but women have to kneel 🤬🤬
Finished this one and it's a tough one to review. While I really liked the plot and the characters (especially Hanna), I would've enjoyed the story more without the addition of its magical realism elements.
Hanna is nine days from turning 18. When she does she will be married to a man nearly three times her age, becoming his 5th wife. It has been ordained. A unexpected read for me, I was sucked into the isolated community, polygamy, the inexorable countdown of days, and Hanna. I was rooting for Hanna as she finally started making her own choices. 👍😊 #catsoflitsy. (Dexter, disoriented, was rudely awakened for the photo.)
Interesting premise but not particularly well executed. Hanna is about to be pushed into a polygamous marriage at age 18 but seems to "be surprised" that she will be expected to have babies, when all the women in her secluded community are doing so. I can suspend disbelief that she doesn't know the outside world but I had a hard time thinking she wouldn't know her own religion inside and out. The magical element felt like an afterthought.
I do love a novel about cults & polygamist sects so I enjoyed this coming of age story. Hanna is about to turn 18 & become the 5th wife of her father's friend when she starts to question her life. The magical realism may have leaned a bit too woo-woo at the end but I loved Hanna & was absorbed in her story. Paired with (vegan) Strawberry Swirl Ice Cream for my blog book tour review. Today's lunch & #soupersundays blog post: Potato & Collard Greens Soup with Maple-Cornmeal Dumplings should be paired with To Kill a Mockingbird since it's inspired by the film for my monthly movie blogging event, but I was reading this book (for review next week) while I ate it. It's a humid 87 degrees F. here but I have the air con on & I'm channeling fall weather through this tasty vegan soup. The dumplings were less successful. Recipe link👇🏻
Oppressive, polygamous cult where a girl finds in herself she's worth more than this life. With some magical realism mixed in. I love.
New read. My 14yo said it's WeIrD.... we'll see!
Day 13 #AndItsAugust #coversinyrfavecolor 💙My favorite color is blue from the palest blue to aqua--light & dark, to gray-blue, to indigo & navy. I was napping when the lighting was better, but here is a stack of blue-hued paperbacks that were handy to grab from my #TBR stacks & my blue chicken 🐔(he has 3 orange friends). 😆 Some of these covers are more blue in person, but blue they are. 🦋💎📘💙
Hanna is a young woman, like any other in the world, except for one thing: she is part of a polygamist community & has just been told, at eighteen, she must marry a man who is her father‘s age & has four other wives. Hanna must make the confusing & heartbreaking decision about where her future lies. Should she stay at home & be obedient to the only family she has ever known, or will she choose her own love & life? A gripping story for book clubs!
This one sounds so good! I have a few reads before I can get to it, but I'm looking forward to giving this one a go! ✨🌥 #arc
