The Taste of Blue Light | Lydia Ruffles
7 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
'Since I blacked out, the slightest thing seems to aggravate my brain and fill it with fire' These are the things Lux knows: She is an Artist. She is lucky. She is broken. These are the things she doesn't know: What happened over the summer. Why she ended up in hospital. Why her memories are etched in red. 'The nightmares tend to linger long after your screams have woken you up ...' Desperate to uncover the truth, Lux's time is running out. If she cannot piece together the events of the summer and regain control of her fractured mind, she will be taken away from everything and everyone she holds dear. If her dreams don't swallow her first.

Bailedbailed

I don't usually bail on books... but I just couldn't carry on with this one.
The main character was whiney, the story slow- Lydia sure can spin a sentence but personally it felt like she was waffling and using fancy words for the sake of it- it really didn't add to the story.
Maybe I'll return to this one day, but at the moment there are so many other *better* books to read.

Cathythoughts I don‘t know this book. But I‘m a real believer in : If you have to bail - you have to bail ❤️👍👍Life & book reading time is way too short ✨ 7y

1. I don't have much art up at the moment, as we're trying to move house but this is one my late grandad painted- it's one of my favourites ❤
2. I never set specific goals, but I'd like to read more classics
3. I'm supposed to wear glasses to read, but always forget!
4. All of them! Give me a nature scene any day!

Chase I buy books based solely on blurbs sometimes too (especially if they're from Tana French or Megan Abbott)! I wish there was a search engine where you could enter a name and find all the books they've blurbed! Come on, Litsy...someone around here has the technical know-how to make this happen, right?? 7y

Lydia Ruffles's debut YA thriller is a Marmite book because while Ruffles has a gift for description and can turn a beautiful sentence, this story of, essentially, a poor little rich girl whose journey to self-absorbed artistic pretension is interrupted by an event that (once revealed) had no emotional impact on me given that she's so revolting to her friends and family and because the central conceit doesn't ring true.

When privilege and elitism meets and defends Art. It's creepy and messing with my mind. #currentlyreading #rso #preview

This is a tricky book to review as it's one which has a big twist and is also one of two halves. The pre-twist part of the book I have to admit I didn't love. Rich girl in a school for artistic kids has amnesia after an incident. The section after the incident though is gripping, thought provoking and well written. So if you like slow burners where you know theirs a pay off it could be for you. I'd have liked a punchier first half.
