Firstborns rule society. Secondborns are the property of the government. Thirdborns are not tolerated. Long live the Fates Republic. On Transition Day, the second child in every family is taken by the government and forced into servitude. Roselle St. Sismode's eighteenth birthday arrives with harsh realizations: she's to become a soldier for the Fate of Swords military arm of the Republic during the bloodiest rebellion in history, and her elite firstborn mother is happy to see her go.Televised since her early childhood, Roselle's privileged upbringing has earned her the resentment of her secondborn peers. Now her decision to spare an enemy on the battlefield marks her as a traitor to the state. But Roselle finds an ally--and more--in fellow secondborn conscript Hawthorne Trugrave. As the consequences of her actions ripple throughout the Fates Republic, can Roselle create a destiny of her own? Or will her Fate override everything she fights for--even love?

(2017) I picked this up as an Amazon First Read, so it's been on my Kindle now for 6 years. I wasn't missing much, since I'm no fan of YA dystopias, and this one collects my least favorite YA-dystopia tropes in one messy package. It's about a self-absorbed super-special teenage Mary Sue telling us about oppression in a world whose rules don't make sense to me. So thumbs-down from me but I'm not the target audience so YMMV

#readYourKindle @CBee

CBee Glad it‘s over with then 😂😅 8mo
swynn @CBee Yep, that's the good news. Fortunately, I don't have any others in the series sitting in my Kindle unread, so I am done with this one. 👍 8mo
CBee @swynn onto the next and hopefully better one 😊 8mo

10/26-10/30
This book is a science fiction dystopian novel about a hierarchy based on whether a person was born first or second. The protagonist, Roselle, is secondborn and she taught me how to be resilient. Her mom and her brother are both trying to kill her, but despite that she still fights to live and loves them from afar. I chose this novel because I was able to relate to this character since I am the middle child too.

I kept seeing this book on my Instagram so decided to give it a try. The idea of Firstborn, Secondborn and Thirdborn seemed like an intriguing idea. While it did have some interesting ideas, it just really didn‘t come together for me like I would have hoped and fell a little flat. I am going to shelve the rest of this trilogy for now and perhaps come back to it at a later date.

Ugh! So much wasted potential. A strong female protagonist with humility and compassion...who is constantly being saved by men (once by a woman who was sent by other men). Surrounded by men who just fall at her lowborn feet. Surrounded by women who don't even rankle at the casual and explicit sexism that seems out of place for a society for whom the end all be all of rank is your birth order, regardless of sex. There was the potential for...

Chelsey ... interesting politics, for adventure, to build the basis for deep and lasting friendships that will give the series a framework. What we got was insta-love with a side of "my love for you made me switch sides", and from the one character that exuded overt sexism in word and deed, a completely uncharacteristic lack of come ons.

Verdict? 4?s and 2⭐️s. The second star because even with 4 ? I had to finish the dumb thing. So there's that.

A dystopian novel set in a world divided into Fates (think districts from Hunger Games) where Roselle is the daughter of the Fate of Swords and is basically a celebrity but also a second born. Firstborns rule the entire Republic while secondborns spend a life in slavery and servitude. She is clearly the better choice to rule her Fate but Roselle would not necessarily like to the rule the Fate but rather revolutionize the entire Republic. 💜#themrs

ReviewsbytheMrs Next book in this trilogy series is set to release in April and might be free for Kindle Unlimited users! 7y

Got to 25% and NOPE. This is a really poorly planned knock-off of Hunger Games, with a heroine who is nonsensical & cardboard at the same time, who is told nobody will like her (which is terrible), and yet also somehow has everybody wanting her all at once. The plot jumps all over the place with no real rhyme or reason. I've got better stories waiting for me.

Can‘t. Tried to stick with it, but the MC makes absolutely no sense — she is constantly doing random things without any strategy or reason, which would work if she were unpredictable and rebellious but she isn‘t. Her personality was undefined at the start and still fails to take shape through the story. Add to that a baseless dystopian society and gratuitous toxic male behavior, and I‘m done. There‘s not enough plot keeping me reading.

MrBook Great review! 7y
Elisa @MrBook thank you! I never know if I manage to convey my ideas properly using less than 450 characters 😅 7y

I don‘t know who gave this (female!) author the idea that making a love interest pull the whole possessive alpha male BS (before he is even in a relationship with the MC!) would make him appealing. IT DOESN‘T. 😡 Hawthorne is rapidly becoming someone I want to drop-kick rather than someone whose flirting and winks might elicit a sigh.

OrangeMooseReads That last bit of sentence, “our lack of decorum.” There is no our in that that is all angry toxic male right there. I don‘t like the guy just from this bit. 7y
Elisa @OrangeMooseReads absolutely agree. I don‘t understand what she was thinking and I‘m tempted to stop reading here but I feel I owe it to the MC to give her a chance and see where the story goes and whether she tells the guy to take a hike and stop manhandling her. 7y
OrangeMooseReads @Elisa I hope she does. 7y
Elisa @OrangeMooseReads she does say a few pages later “I‘ve reached my limit for being manhandled today. The next person who tries will wind up hurting.” 😏 7y
OrangeMooseReads @Elisa well at least she found her Daly limit 🙄 7y

This book is odd. So much going on, but the world-building is sketchy, with no rhyme or reason offered, so it‘s hard to give things the significance they probably have.
And the MC doesn‘t seem to be able to decide what kind of person she is — it‘s like her actions are taken from a mix-and-match list.
But I am a sucker for dystopian societies and this one is intriguing so I‘m going to stick with it for now.

I started this on audiobook while cleaning the kitchen, and the beginning reminded me of that scene in the Hunger Games trilogy where Cain is giving a speech and using Katniss next to her for impact and credibility. I‘ll give this a whirl! (On Kindle though, because audiobooks are hard for me to focus on.)

TriciaO Let us know how it turns out! 😊 7y

This book. Ugh. I've got to say, I tried to like it, I really did. It has a dystopian feel to it, political intrigue, sci-fi elements and a strong female main character. Unfortunately, the execution just didn't do it for me. It felt like the author just threw a bunch of ideas down, but didn't ever really flesh any of them out. There were interesting elements but no real world or character building. It was almost like reading a rough draft.

I must admit I didn't expect much from this book when I picked it up on the daily kindle deal, but I was intrigued by the blurb. So you can imagine my surprise when I couldn't put it down! This first instalment of Roselle's story is fast-paced, action packed and full of political intrigue. My only complaint is that some of the world building attempted was a bit ineffective, however in this character-driven story this really is a minor issue.

Downloaded this awhile ago for my free Amazon First pick. I really wasn't sure I was going to like it at first as there was a lot of information thrown at me in the first few chapters. Although, I gave it a fair shot and ended up loving it! I went to try and download the next book only to be told that it won't be out till spring of next year 😩😭😩😭. Not gonna lie, I may not survive the wait 😂

It reminded me of The Hunger Games, in the best way! A fearless and kind heroine goes from having luxury but no love to a place where people want her dead. People begin to take interest in her, will it be for her benefit?

A well written, descriptive, suspense filled and action packed journey begins! I was turning pages just to keep up until it was 6am and I was all of a sudden 94% done. The ending was a bit abrupt, but I can't wait for the next!

Somehow I completely missed the fact that Amy Bartol had another book coming out! I was so excited when I saw Seconborn was a Kindle First book for July - I immediately downloaded it and started reading! Have you read it? What did you think?⠀

My Kindle First pick for July.

[DELETED] 206653737 I got this one too, sounds really good. 👍 7y
JessClark78 @bookish22 It does sound good. I saw it has a lot of good reviews, too. 7y
[DELETED] 206653737 Yes I saw that as well. We shall see, whenever I get around to it. 📚 7y
Fortifiedbybooks This was my pick as well, but I'm sceptical about how good it will be. The blurb was not inspiring. 7y
