It was a bit hard to get into at first, a bit hard to follow. Have to admit, I didn‘t like either Jude or Angela. As a warning, there is a lot of sex and drugs, or at least talk of it. It probably shouldn‘t have, but the end came as a surprise to me. But, it blew me away. Overall, I‘m rating it “good"

BookwormM You bleed just to know you‘re alive. Is that title from Iris by the GooGoo Dolls 6y
LibraryCin @BookwormM It is a line in a song, though i cant recall, without looking it up, what song. It could very well, be iris! 6y

Book 2 for #4in48readathon finished...umm what did I just read? I get now what the other reviews meant by it being extreme and outrageous - bloodyhell! I don‘t know if I liked any of the characters or if I just pitied them. I‘m not even sure what I think of this book 🤯

I admire the hell out of this book. It's like early Francesca Lia Block's dark reflection, with its protagonist determined to survive his horrible life by turning everything that happens to him into further proof that he's a star.

But at the same time, Teenage Me would've HATED this because it's one of those Teen Issues novels that centres Universal Teen Experiences I didn't share. At all. Even now, I had trouble looking past that.

xicanti Also, it's a Canadian YA novel set in Nowheresville, USA. That always biases me against a book. America is not the default. 7y

Holy bleep, what did I just read? That was wild! I enjoyed it a lot despite the fact I hope the teenagers behaviour is exaggerated, over the top?! If it isn't I should be terrified for my some day teenager. Still, I thought there was a lot of greatness in there. Poor Jude's tough life, how he coped, how darn likeable he is at times and the motivations behind some of his crazy outbursts... Sad and crazy and beautiful.

Very quick read, I started it this afternoon and couldn't put it down. I fee like I'll be thinking about this book for quite some time.

Popped into the library to pickup my next bookclub read. With a lot of restraint I only left with 2 additional books 😁

I might be invited to co-run a panel with #razielreid at the @calgarylibrary this year. So I snagged his book to read (been picking it up and putting it down for a while now)
Showed my mom, put it down on the table
I might not be getting it back any time soon :-)

I'm fairly sure this is an important book. I don't remember having read a trans school experience before, so it's important in that sense if nothing else. It has a nonconformist fairly unreliable narrator, who has a horrible home life. I'm glad I read it, and I learned things from it, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it. But I'm not sure I was meant to though. I do think lots of people should read it, but I suspect it'll get banned a lot.

I'm a bit torn about this book right now - I'm enjoying the writing, but not the characters, and I'm wondering if it's really YA? But then again, why not? They do remind me of my teenage years... an extreme version of it, maybe.

Final book in the challenge I received to read all five 2015 Canada Reads shortlist books. First time I've read anything labeled YA LGBT. Bullying and all coercion to fit in the imaginary binary suck. Good view into how growing up queer in a gender/orientation repressive society can be tragic

The best thing about this was the Goo Goo Dolls ref in the title. I found it too coarse and vulgar, almost for the sake of it. The characters seemed cliché, which is a shame if it's based on true events. Didn't bail but didn't enjoy. ARC from NetGallery.

StaceyKondla I didn't like this one much either. The author can write very well, but I just couldn't like the main character. Agreed that it felt pretty cliché 9y

I want to like this book but I don't. I just didn't like how the characters were self-centered and almost nihilistic. Sigh. I applaud Reid for writing a consistently strong story no matter how it made me feel. Kudos to this first time author & I'm await his next book.
