Falling Slowly
Falling Slowly | Anita Brookner
3 posts | 2 to read
The brilliant Anita Brookner, praised by The New York Times as "one of the finest novelists of her generation," now gives us a stunning story of two sisters and the strange patterns of identity and love. The Sharpe sisters have lived a careful and contemplative existence. Miriam is a translator of French texts and Beatrice a moderately successful pianist. Their lives of quiet sophistication are suddenly interrupted by several complicated men: Max, Beatrice's agent; Simon, a handsome and charming married man; and Tom Rivers, a journalist who befriends Miriam. These men create disorder in the Sharpe sisters' controlled lives as Miriam, the unromantic stoic of the two, begins an affair and Beatrice's career undergoes an unexpected change. The exquisite writing, affecting characters, and astonishing psychological perceptions for which Anita Brookner is famous are evident on every page of this beautiful novel by a modern master.

LeahBergen @readordierachel @vivastory @LauraBeth @Melissa_J Thanks for appreciating my laziness. 😉 6y
LeahBergen @saresmoore @emilyhaldi 😆 Nope, no cataloguing system. I‘ve always had a (weirdly) good memory for what books I own and where they are shelved. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
erzascarletbookgasm 😆👍 fantastic! 6y

Day 9 - #fallingslowly #musicalnewyear

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out
Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You'll make it now
Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me

Cinfhen I wasn‘t familiar with the song, musical or movie ~ were you? 6y
EadieB @Cinfhen No but you calling attention to it is great! That song is beautiful! 6y
Cinfhen That‘s thanks to @vivastory he chose the entire song list 🙌🏻 6y

EadieB @Cinfhen I guess he‘s the theatre buff. My mom and dad saw over 2500 broadway shows and off-broadway in their lifetime. 6y
8little_paws Omg I remember this movie. I went to see it on ny last date with my first serious boyfriend, we broke up shortly after! Sounds like a sad story but 12 years later we have both moved on 😁. 6y
EadieB @8little_paws interesting? 6y
8little_paws Are you asking if the movie is interesting? 6y
EadieB @8little_paws yes did you enjoy it? 6y
8little_paws @EadieB it was 12 years ago, I have no idea 😂 I recall it being very melancholy 6y
EadieB @8little_paws ok thanks! 6y
JamieArc I liked the movie (saw it when it came out) and LOVED the album. I still listen to it. 6y
VioletBramble I love this movie, the album and the play. I was lucky to see the play while Arthur Darvill, Rory from Doctor Who, was performing the lead role. It's a sad story, but hopeful and the lyrics are beautiful. 6y
JaclynW @EadieB @Cinfhen The movie (Once) was SO GOOD!!! 😍😍😍 The music is excellent!! It really pulls at your heartstrings! And the Hoover song is hilarious. 😃 6y
Cinfhen Whoa!!! Your parents were REAL theatre buffs!! Although last year I managed to see 5 performances 4 on Broadway and one inLondon! 6y
EadieB @Cinfhen They saw the opening show of Oklahoma. People said it would flop because of too much ballet. The history of musical theatre can be divided up thusly: there‘s pre-Oklahoma! and post-Oklahoma!, that‘s how influential this Rodgers and Hammerstein golden-era musical is. (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I saw Oklahoma but definitely not opening night! And it was probably a revival...I‘m thinking it was 1980‘s 6y
EadieB @Cinfhen March 31, 1943 it opened.
This would prove to be one of the most off-base predictions in theater history when the slightly retooled show opened on Broadway on March 31, 1943 under a new title—Oklahoma!—and went on to set a Broadway record of 2,212 performances before finally closing more than 15 years later.
6y
Cinfhen There must have been a revival in the 80‘s or early 90‘s because I remember seeing it! 6y
EadieB @Cinfhen They have had revivals. I remember seeing it too. 6y
EadieB @Cinfhen My dad‘s favorite musical was Carousel. He loved the music in that one. 6y
Cinfhen That‘s another golden oldie which I have not seen 6y
Jilly6183 I adore this song ❤️ 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB And my mum‘s! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 You mum‘s favourite was Carousel? 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Yes and also Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 That‘s Nice! My mom loved Seven Brides for Seven Brothers too! I remember her saying that! So funny! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Very! I think for my mum it was Howard Keel in particular! 😂 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Howard Keep was a handsome dude. I just checked him out! 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB He had a great voice in his day too! (edited) 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 it said on wiki that his landlady heard him singing when he was 20 and told him to get voice lessons. He was in Oklahoma too. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB He was, another great Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 Reading further he was a star in a lot of musicals. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB And Dallas! 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 didn‘t realize he was on Dallas. 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB Clayton, husband of Miss Ellie. 6y
EadieB @Andrew65 I do recognize him now because I‘m watching him on you tube when he was older singing songs from Oklahoma. 6y

ReadingEnvy Hahahaha I haven't encountered this one yet, but I'm gathering enough where I need to carry a list with me so I don't double purchase! 7y
LeahBergen @Nute It's quite stark and pretty, isn't it? 7y
LeahBergen @Leniverse Oh, that song! 💗💗 7y
LeahBergen @Suet624 But of course. 😏 7y
LeahBergen @ReadingEnvy I actually had to double check this title before I bought it. 😂 7y
saresmoore I, too, spotted a Brookner at the used bookstore! It was not pretty, so it stayed on the shelf, but so far I can't disprove @ReadingEnvy 's theory! 7y
