Really good gonzo-style memoir of Sexton's American travels and observations during the 2016 campaign. He attends a ton of rallies and conventions for the Democrats, Republicans, Greens, and Socialists, and reports on all in detail. He also lives in fear from some truly scary death threats. And drinks. A LOT.

They wanted angry candidates warring against culture as a whole. What they wanted, and what they would get, was rage.

Looking for a book on how we got Trump? This book. I've been following Sexton's work for a while on Twitter, as he did a lot of on the ground reporting during the primaries and election. He hails from Indiana and has witnessed first hand a lot of the racial and economic resentment that has boiled over in many communities, leading us to elect the poster child of everything wrong with this country. 👇🏼

BookishFeminist Sexton traveled the country to attend rallies and party conventions for all major candidates, Trump, Clinton, Sanders, and Stein. But his focus was less on the candidates and more on the people who attended. He spoke with them, leaving nothing aside, be it flagrant racism and toxic white nationalism, ignorance to fact on all sides, or media. He tries to find the good in people without glossing over the bad. 👇🏼 7y
BookishFeminist Moreover, his prose is beautiful, powerful, and honest. His candid approach to the violence at rallies across the country, the upsurge in violent racism and hate crimes, the polarization of our political climate, and the real struggles of people across the country are all dissected here with candor and empathy. He approaches the cognitive dissonance that has grown increasingly obvious in this country in a realistic way. 👇🏼 7y
BookishFeminist Overall this is a really great book that deserves more press than it's getting. I appreciate his honesty about the difficulties he's had with his own family transitioning from democrats to extreme conservatives against their own interests, which he puts in historical context for those unfamiliar with how our political landscape has changed. It would be a great read alongside Clinton's What Happened and Katy Tur's book on the Trump campaign. 🇺🇸 (edited) 7y

Happy first day of fall! It's hot today but I'm going to pretend it's not. 🍂🍂

This is a seriously good book about the election. It's really sharp and well-written. I can't put it down, which I never thought I'd say about political nonfiction despite loving to read it.

Holed up in bed with a migraine today. It's finally lightened up a little bit so I'm going to start this—I'm still making my way through HRC's memoir but that will be slow going. I've had my eye on this and it's due back at the library soon. Jared Yates Sexton has been great to follow on Twitter during the election and has been an important voice speaking out against this disaster of an administration, so i have high hopes for his book!

Another day deserving of a #heavypour of wine. But at least it's almost over! I went to the library while my phone and glasses were getting repaired, so I have a nice haul, including the tagged book which I nominate for best book title of the year.

Now to drink and read. 📚🍷🍷🍷

amckiereads I'm interested to hear what you think of Hum. I've heard some conflicting things. (Mainly that the publisher is comparing it to The Help 😬) 7y

#TBRtemptation post 2! #BEA17 edition! Slated for a September 12th release. This is a firsthand account of the events that shaped the 2016 presidential election. Sexton's tweets took center-stage early on and remained there throughout the process. He wrote for a wide variety of news publications, and now he lays everything out in behind-the-scenes, on-the-street, vivid detail. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

AmyG I follow him on instagram. Thanks for the heads up. 8y
