Don‘t read this book unless lots of animal death and racism don‘t bother you and you‘re just super into Victorian science. I‘m Brooke H on Goodreads if you want to read my full review. (And yes, I did read this entire book to prep for a trip to the Galapagos. Of which there was one chapter. So.)

Penguin Classics is celebrating 75th anniversary, so I got myself the tagged book and Michel De Montaigne‘s Complete Essays. Kinokuniya has a promo: buy 2 and get a free tote bag. I found a bookmark and a postcard inside the bag. Yay!

charl08 Ooh, nice! 😍 3y

4⭐️

I‘m so happy that I finally finished this book. It‘s definitely been on my “classics in the environmental field” list for way too long.

Had way too many thoughts on it so check out my goodreads review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3654422202

June wrap. Loved the voyage around the world and the mind-melting fiction of PKD. And bourbon! The Three-Body Problem was a huge disappointment. #junewrapup

In his five year journey Darwin provided a detailed account of the people and geography of each location visited in addition to the flora and fauna which you would expect a young naturalist (he was only 22 when the voyage started) to spend a lot of time studying. His writing is profound, and easily digestible by a layman such as myself. This is a fascinating and enjoyable travelogue written by one of the greatest scientists to walk the planet.

Interesting but exhausting. The mindset and voice of a highly privileged white man in the 1800s is a difficult one for me. However, a fascinating account of an incredible journey.
