Heartwrenchingly moving. I was intrigued by the 1940s dialogue and history and medicine capability at that time, but I was thoroughly enchanted with Johnny and his heroic quest just to live. When I'm having a bad day, I will think of this young, brave man and try to follow his example every day of my life.

A memoir written in the mid-1940s by a father whose 17-year-old son fought (and ultimately lost) a battle with brain cancer. It was a well-written and poignant story, but it reminded me of another memoir I read years ago that I thought was a bit better overall: "Eric" by Doris Herold Lund. 3/5 stars

This is one of the most heartbreaking and beautiful memoirs. Though the subject of one‘s son dying from a brain tumor seems unbearable to read about, Gunther highlights the endearing, loving nature of his child so that readers are forced to fall in love with him. The narrative tells of a simpler time (the 1940s) but also shows how grief is the one thing that never changes throughout time.

The tagged book was the second thing that popped in my head with #death in it so hence the quote connected to it.
