Will's Red Coat
Will's Red Coat: The story of one old dog who chose to live again | Tom Ryan
3 posts | 4 read
Tom Ryan touched the hearts of thousands when he wrote about his intrepid little dog Atticus and their quest to climb 48 mountains to raise money in memory of a friend who had died of cancer. But nothing touched his fans more than the story of Will, the old, gruff dog whom Tom and Atticus brought into their home in May 2012, believing that they were simply doing a good deed by helping nurse an old dog through his final days. With the right attention and affection in a loving home, Will bounced back and lived for two more years - to the ripe old age of 17 - and helped Tom understand a great deal about aging, how to live a full life and make the best of our days. In Will's Red Coat, Tom tells the story of his misadventures with Will and how he nursed him back to health and a good life.

I loved Following Atticus (same author), but was reluctant to give this one a chance because I knew it was a tear-jerker. I figured since I just lost one of my dogs to a brain tumor and I'd be crying anyway that now was the time to read it. I have mixed feelings. Ryan's writing is beautiful and eloquent. I didn't find the story inspiring or uplifting like many other readers, but maybe my reading was clouded by grief. I'm glad I read it.

Came across this book a while back (TBR, of course), & it sounds right up my bookshelf. Written by the NY Times bestseller of Following Atticus, it's a story of a rescue dog. #sellmeacoat #winterwonderland
From the back cover blurb - "To the right, a tiny red coat with a thick white collar dangles from a hook. It looks a lot like Christmas & is just about the right size for an elf. There is a bit of magic in it. Of this I have no doubt. ?

Tanisha_A For that little coat gets me to stop many times each day to consider what matters in life and what it means to be human". 6y

JoScho This looks adorable but I wonder if it ends sad. So many books about dogs do. 6y

Touching, honest, and beautifully written. Tom Ryan has done it again, bringing us the story of a geriatric dog he saved from a miserable last few days in a kill shelter. William was feisty and untrusting, but proved himself able to love and be loved. What a gift this book is.
