Mehso-so

Tragedy strikes early in this story. Modeled after American politician John Edwards‘ life, the Christies are a mess. Parents David and Danielle are flawed and shallow. Teenager Nick is the perfect son. The youngest, Betsy, tells much of the story.

Montemarano jumps around in chronology and perspective, and I couldn‘t connect with the characters. They go through plenty of drama, but show no complex emotions.

Cinfhen Darn, I was hoping to read this one...oh well, nice graphics 😍 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I wanted to like it. It wasn‘t terrible, but I definitely didn‘t love it. I can‘t say much without spoilers but there‘s an early plot point that I think he seriously failed to express accurately. At least from the perspective of the characters‘ emotional reactions. 😰 Can‘t wait to see what my book group thought about it. 7y

I‘m reading this one for my IRL book club this month. I almost bailed after the first big plot event because it hit too close to home. Obviously my book club friends don‘t know me very well.

But I‘m hanging in there ... even though I‘m skeptical (again based on that first plot event).

#localauthor #tooclosetohome

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Fingers crossed it gets better for you! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks M! If not, I‘ll just bail even though I (gasp!) paid full price for the ebook. It‘s a legit response for a book club pick. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage It can be, and if you just bought it recently, you might be able to return the ebook. 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, I was thinking the same thing! 7y
LauraBeth Did you bail on this one or are you still reading it? I‘ve been curious about this book - but I don‘t want to waste my time! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraBeth I‘m still reading and I‘ll probably finish. The plot line that was hard for me is fading enough to keep going. But it‘s just a three-star so far. Since our book group is reading it, I‘m okay with that. 7y

Read for #LMPBC “Litsy Markup Postal Book Club”. It was an interesting book. I especially liked the 1980/1990s cultural references. Some of them really brought back memories. I will hold off on mailing it to the next person in Group A until the end of the month so that things don‘t get confusing.

Natasha.C.Barnes I'm so intrigued! Can't wait. 7y

What a pleasant surprise. I received the #LMPBC Group A book from @LauraJ today. Included was a second book that I‘ve been meaning to read for some time now. Thank you so much. I‘m sure I will enjoy both of them. ❤️

Love having #bookmail waiting for me after a trip! This one was originally a generous #ARC from @Tin_House over a month ago, but then it turned out I had messed up my address with a typo and never received it - so they (even more generously!) offered to put another in the mail even though it was my own fault. Thank you!! 🙌🏽

Parents make bad choices, children are left ill-equipped to deal with life. This is a weak pick. Great writing, but the story lacks intensity.

So @suvata ...is it okay to change my #lmpbc book to this? @Natasha.C.Barnes @TheBookHippie

Natasha.C.Barnes As far as I'm concerned -yes!! 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes The other was on my TBR but when I read more about this one I was dying to read it, so I'm psyched. 7y

This book has our #vote. Happy pub day to THE SENATOR'S CHILDREN by Nicholas Montemarano, now available wherever fine books are sold!

"Engrossing, brilliantly structured . . . By asking whether forgiveness can conquer blame, and whether we might even be able to treat strangers like family, THE SENATOR'S CHILDREN feels like exactly the kind of novel we need." --Eric Puchner

ARC. This was a fast and absorbing read. A senator (seemingly based on John Edwards - without spoiling too much) and the lives of his children and wife are explored bouncing back and forth in time. Because there are only a handful of characters the multiple perspectives are easy to track and each one is drawn with empathy. I liked how it unfolded over time and the back and forth worked without seeming gimmicky. Would recommend. #lrc #indie

ChasingOm Oof. I worked for Edwards in 2007/2008 -- not sure if I could handle this if it hits close to home. 🙁 7y
Blaire @ChasingOm it takes place in PA from 1977-2010. Runs for senate and then for president (for pres in 92), but the personal details are similar - re: children, wife, affair. Also references two Americas as his stump speech. For me was reminiscent tho the rest of the story - what happens post campaign is very different. 7y

I'm hearing good things about this one - recommended if you like political dramas and dysfunctional families. Release date is actually November (Litsy lists it as January). @Laalaleighh

Laalaleighh Oooh you know I'm stacking this 📚 8y
minkyb Just heard a review of this on Front Porch podcast. I look forward to it too. 8y
Izai.Amorim I get a lot of that reading the Washington Post. 😂With this president the news feels like reading fiction. One additional thing he will lay waste to: the market for political fiction, I'm afraid. You can't come up with a better plot than the one going on live right now! 😔 8y
See All 8 Comments
LauraBeth So true @Izai.Amorim - I just watched the first episode of the newest season of House of Cards last night - that political fiction can't compare with the craziness currently going on in the White House! 8y
LauraBeth @minkyb that means I'll love it because I usually love their picks! 8y
LauraBeth @Laalaleighh 👍☺️ 8y
Izai.Amorim @LauraBeth I haven't started watching yet because I fear the same. You know what? He's ruining late-night TV as well. It was fun in the beginning, even cathartic, but after the 1,000th joke you start wondering, haven't I heard that one before? Is this a rerun? Can't they talk about anything else? 8y
LauraBeth @Izai.Amorim He's just ruining everything in general! I've tried to stay away from late-night tv because I don't want any of that nonsense in my head before I fall asleep 😴 8y
