Feeling Sorry for Celia
Feeling Sorry for Celia: A Novel | Jaclyn Moriarty
7 posts | 21 read | 12 to read
A #1 Bestseller in Australia and Book Sense 76 Pick Life is pretty complicated for Elizabeth Clarry. Her best friend Celia keeps disappearing, her absent father suddenly reappears, and her communication with her mother consists entirely of wacky notes left on the fridge. On top of everything else, because her English teacher wants to rekindle the "Joy of the Envelope," a Complete and Utter Stranger knows more about Elizabeth than anyone else. But Elizabeth is on the verge of some major changes. She may lose her best friend, find a wonderful new friend, kiss the sexiest guy alive, and run in a marathon. So much can happen in the time it takes to write a letter... A #1 bestseller in Australia, this fabulous debut is a funny, touching, revealing story written entirely in the form of letters, messages, postcardsand bizarre missives from imaginary organizations like The Cold Hard Truth Association. Feeling Sorry for Celia captures, with rare acuity, female friendship and the bonding and parting that occurs as we grow. Jaclyn Moriarty's hilariously candid novel shows that the roller coaster ride of being a teenager is every bit as fun as we rememberand every bit as harrowing.

2. There are a few but for now I‘ll say Dolores Umbridge, everyone in Gone Girl, and Joffrey. 😡
3. Over. I‘m not a heathen!
4. Maid of honor 3 times and bridesmaid 4 more times. There‘s a reason I was broke throughout my 20s!

For my #epistolary novel for #readjanuary I decided to throw it back to one of my high school faves, about two Australian pen pals who live in the same town and go to neighboring schools, have never met, but become BFFs. I absolutely loved the themes of growing up, outgrowing some friends, but also growing into new friends. The sweet YA romance in there is a personal favorite too.

CocoReads That's a good one too. 8y
Sfox414 I never read this one, but one of my hs faves was The Year of Secret Assignments--I think it was sort of a sequel to Feeling Sorry for Celia, set at the same school with the same pen pal concept. 8y
maximoffs I love this book so much. I randomly found it at my library and then could never find it again so it has that magical quality for me 8y

Pinkmeghan Thanks @CocoReads and @Sfox414 I think I saw that at some point, I'll have to see if I can track it down. 8y
Pinkmeghan @steverogers I actually found it because I shelved it when I was working as a library aide, was obsessed and bought my own copy. I may need to do a re-read to see how it holds up! 8y
GlitteryOtters So glad to see someone else posting favorite epistolary novel! (I'm behind on the photo prompts because my husband has been lying sick in bed & is blocking my access to the books I need which are in the bookcase alongside his side of the bed, but once he is up & on his feet again, I'll be posting this one too!) 8y

Pickpick

Told as letters between Elizabeth & new pen pal Christina, notes between E & her mom, & memos to E from her subconscious, manifesting as imaginary organisations like The Association of Teenagers. This book about E & best friend Celia growing apart, & E becoming close to Christina, is one of my favourites. A hilarious and moving read. The way that the pair of friendships - one in its last days, another in its infancy - is handled is wonderful.

I'm reading this at work today on a recommendation from a coworker. I'm only 50 pages in, but I've already pressed EVERYBODY SEES THE ANTS by A.S. King on her as a potential read-alike.
