Wolf Whistle Politics
Wolf Whistle Politics: The New Misogyny in America Today | Diane Wachtell
7 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
The 2016 election year may be remembered as a year to forget, but for American women in politics and feminists alike it was unforgettably distressinga flash point illuminating both the true state of play for women in public life and feminist politics in the early twenty-first century. Wolf Whistle Politics is a book that tries to account for, contextualize, and even make some sense out of this trying political chapter in American history. With an introduction by Naomi Wolf and pieces by leading journalists and essayists ranging from Lindy Wests Donald and Billy on the Bus, to Amy Davidsons What Wendy Davis Stood For, and Rhon Manigault-Bryants Open Letter to White, Liberal Feminists, this collection comprises the best political reporting and socio-historical analysis on everything from the contentious meaning of a potential first female president to the misogynist overtones of Hillary Rodham Clintons electoral defeat by Donald Trump; from rape culture to reproductive rights; Pantsuit Nation to poor women of color; media double standards to hashtag activism. Together these pieces form a constellation aptly symbolized by the lascivious wolf whistle, a demeaning, sexually loaded catcall which, unlike the racial dog whistle, has nothing subtle or covert about it. Wolf Whistle Politics shines a bright light on the complex relationship between women and politics today, reflecting on what we lost, what we won, and what we can do to move forward.

Mehso-so

A decent collection of previously published essays. I expected some new pieces and so was a bit disappointing. Also found it hard to read some of the more optimistic pre election pieces. Basically just look up the articles and save your cash for something else.

BookishFeminist I think I may have recommended this to you last week? But I heard this one is better: 7y
amckiereads @BookishFeminist yep it's on my wish list! If it isn't just a collection of opinion pieces it will already be better. Hah 7y

Pickpick

I was too young to vote in 2000, but I was aware of politics in the 90's. I have very distinct memories of the abuse that Hillary & Chelsea took in the press. Hillary is only a few years older than my mom, & Chelsea a few years older than me. This was an incredibly difficult read. I feel like we are going backwards again. We have such a long way to go still. Fighting is exhausting me to my very core, but I can't do anything else. I can't give up.

This book is good, but it is emotionally draining and hard to get through at times. I've been trying to read at least one piece or essay a day at lunch, but I can't handle it every day.
I can't stop being sad and angry. There are too many lives on the line to become complacent. But fighting every day is eating my soul.
