Jennifer Government
Jennifer Government | Max Barry
13 posts | 36 read | 16 to read
Taxation has been abolished, the government has been privatized, and employees take the surname of the company they work for. It's a brave new corporate world, but you don't want to be caught without a platinum credit card--as lowly Merchandising Officer Hack Nike is about to find out. Trapped into building street cred for a new line of $2500 sneakers by shooting customers, Hack attracts the barcode-tattooed eye of the legendary Jennifer Government. A stressed-out single mom, corporate watchdog, and government agent who has to rustle up funding before she's allowed to fight crime, Jennifer Government is holding a closing down sale--and everything must go. A wickedly satirical and outrageous thriller about globalization and marketing hype, Jennifer Government is the best novel in the world ever. From the Trade Paperback edition.

The extreme capitalism seemed dystopian when I first read this. Less & less though

“America is the greatest group of countries in the world because we have freedom. In countries like France, where the Government isn‘t privatized, they still have to pay tax & do whatever the Government says, which would really suck. In USA countries, we respect individual rights & let people do whatever they want.”

A weird book that I heard about back in high school (I think) and finally got a copy of to read. I‘m honestly not sure how I feel about this one. It takes place in the future where corporations (openly) run everything and you actually take on the name of the company you work for (John Nike for example). Definitely a weird story.

Day 4: #7days7covers #covercrush

7 days, 7 covers, no explanations.

@Hollie's post with the Between Shades of Grey cover reminded me of this one!

silentrequiem I really liked this book! 5y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards So did I! It was the first book my husband ever recommended I read, and got me hooked on Max Barry. Then again, I got him hooked on Neil Gaiman with Good Omens. 😁 5y
Revenge4bess Have either of you read Lexicon by Max Barry? 4y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards @Saavylibrarian Yes! You can find my review of it here on Litsy. I liked it, but boy, was it brutal. 4y

#7days7covers No explanation. #covercrush (Day 2, take 2)

Liz_M I know, I know this is cheating. But I didn't consider the full range of choices before posting!

Liz_M @BarbaraBB It is the first new book I remember buying purely based on the cover. 😃 5y

When I first read this 11 years ago, I was using a book app that suddenly disappeared, along with most of my data. I remembered really liking it; but, anymore, that makes me apprehensive about rereading [my tastes have changed, understandably, through the years]. Luckily, I really liked it this time, too! This particular dystopia isn't triggering me as much as many of my old faves do now that we're living them. Whew—dodged a bullet there!

iread2much I read this maybe 9 years ago...I remember liking it, but I don‘t remember much more about it. I‘m glad to see someone else enjoyed it 6y

Squidapus is a big fan of Max Barry but this is unfortunately not his best book. While the world and plot are really interesting what drew the book down was the main character, Jennifer. She always seems to be stopping short or unable to actually take any action or accomplish anything. A character you are consistently told is badass but at the end of the book you try and think what she actually ever did other than stand around late to the party.

It's a funny time to re-read dystopian novels. Fifteen years later and the hyper-capitalism feels a little less far fetched. Not a particularly deeply meaningful read, but thought-provoking and fun!

Overall, I wasn't impressed with this book. Every time I got settled and invested with a particular character, the scene jumped to another one. That made it harder to follow, plus the characters weren't very deep. I read it for the #2017readingchallenge for #firstnameinatitle. It's between a So-so and a Pan, honestly

readinginthedark That's too bad; I was planning to read this one. 😕 8y
Born.A.Reader @readinginthedark You might like it better. Honestly it had promise to be decent, but I felt it was too jumpy for my taste. 8y
readinginthedark @Born.A.Reader Honestly, I was just desperate for books starting with a J for LitsyAtoZ. 😆Probably just need to ask more people. 8y

Born.A.Reader @readinginthedark if you like fantasy and don't mind puns lol you can try this one. It's in an ongoing series but you can read it out of order and it won't make a difference. 8y
readinginthedark @Born.A.Reader Interesting, thanks! 8y
Born.A.Reader @readinginthedark you're welcome! That's my favorite fantasy series, if you end up reading it and like it, let me know! I'd love to converse with another Xanth lover! 8y

The premise was interesting but by the middle of the story I still didn't care. Shame about the meh but a movie version would rock.
