Ghostman
Ghostman | Roger Hobbs
8 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
Stunningly dark, hugely intelligent and thoroughly addictive, Ghostman announces the arrival of an exciting and highly distinctive novelist. When a casino robbery in Atlantic City goes horribly awry, the man who orchestrated it is obliged to call in a favor from someone whos occasionally called Jack. While its doubtful that anyone knows his actual name or anything at all about his true identity, or even if hes still alive, hes in his mid-thirties and lives completely off the grid, a criminals criminal who does entirely as he pleases and is almost impossible to get in touch with. But within hours a private jet is flying this exceptionally experienced fixer and cleaner-upper from Seattle to New Jersey and right into a spectacular mess: one heister dead in the parking lot, another winged but on the run, the shooter a complete mystery, the $1.2 million in freshly printed bills god knows where and the FBI already waiting for Jack at the airport, to be joined shortly by other extremely interested and elusive parties. He has only forty-eight hours until the twice-stolen cash literally explodes, taking with it the wider, byzantine ambitions behind the theft. To contend with all this will require every gram of his skill, ingenuity and self-protective instincts, especially when offense and defense soon become meaningless terms. And as he maneuvers these exceedingly slippery slopes, he relives the botched bank robbery in Kuala Lumpur five years earlier that has now landed him this unwanted new assignment. From its riveting opening pages, Ghostman effortlessly pulls the reader into Jacks refined and peculiar worldand the sophisticated shadowboxing grows ever more intense as he moves, hour by hour, toward a constantly reimprovised solution. With a quicksilver plot, gripping prose and masterly expertise, Roger Hobbs has given us a novel that will immediately place him in the company of our most esteemed crime writers. Exclusively for the eBook: Autobiography of a Ghostman.

#RedRoseSeptember

(Day 12 - #MoneysTooTightToMention & Day 13 - #Panic)

*Given that the book begins with an elaborate plan to rob an armored car in front of an Atlantic City casino, we can assume that #MoneysTooTightToMention. But even the best plans can go awry. And when it does, the lost loot, which comes directly from the US Mint, will explode if not recovered in a short time. Now, #Panic ensues, as various entities go after that money. 💰💸

arlenefinnigan Double link. Nice! 5y
gradcat @arlenefinnigan Had to do it...no time the day before, so what‘s a Litten to do, but double duty! 😂 5y

Pickpick

Disclaimer - listened to the audiobook. I really enjoyed this story. Just enough suspense to keep it interesting, although the middle did seem a little repetitive in plot. Made for a great commute listen.

1. I love the tagged book, but unfortunately the author died from a drug overdose. A sequel was published, called “Vanishing Games.” He was a promising young author (only 28 when he died). It‘s very much a case of wasted potential. 📖
2. I pull the covers up, along with the duvet every day...at least it looks neat! 🛏

Suet624 I didn‘t know that about Hobbs. How sad. 6y
gradcat @Suet624 I only found out very recently, when I was thinking about “Ghostman” and looking for the sequel. He died in 2016. And I must correct myself: There was a sequel published in 2015, called “Vanishing Games.” Also, his death is listed as a drug overdose, not necessarily suicide. I really dropped the ball on this...so sorry! Now I must correct item 1 in my post. 😔 (edited) 6y
Suet624 Hahaha. It‘s all good. 6y
gradcat @Suet624 Thank you. I feel absolutely awful when I make mistakes like those, especially in print! 😱 6y

Panpan

Readable; but pretty damn pedestrian. No interesting characters or plotting. Stick with Dashiell Hammett.
