The Lady Travelers Guide to Scoundrels and Other Gentlemen
The Lady Travelers Guide to Scoundrels and Other Gentlemen: A Historical Romance Novel | Victoria Alexander
15 posts | 14 read | 2 to read
Embark on the breathtaking romantic adventures of The Lady Travelers Society in the brand-new series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander Really, it's too much to expect any normal man to behave like a staid accountant in order to inherit the fortune he deserves to support the lifestyle of an earl. So when Derek Saunders's favorite elderly aunt and her ill-conceivedand possibly fraudulentLady Travelers Society loses one of their members, what's a man to do but step up to the challenge? Now he's escorting the world's most maddening woman to the world's most romantic city to find her missing relative. While India Prendergast only suspects his organization defrauds gullible travelers, she's certain a man with as scandalous a reputation as Derek Saunders cannot be trusted any farther than the distance around his very broad shoulders. As she struggles not to be distracted by his wicked smile and the allure of Paris, instead of finding a lost lady traveler, India just may lose her head, her luggage and her heart.

'It certainly did not look like the type of place where genteel, older ladies were bilked out of their life savings. Nonetheless - India Prendergast narrowed her eyes - it was.'
(The opening words to this book.)

humouress ‘It is not uncommon for a lady traveler, especially one who is inexperienced, to find herself feeling like a different person altogether when in completely new surroundings. One must decide for oneself whether to embrace that or disregard it‘ Each chapter is prefaced by trite (and obvious) quotes purportedly from the club‘s pamphlets. 14mo

Not the most auspicious beginning; I was desperately trying to finish the first chapter last night before I nodded off but ...
I think we're supposed to empathise with the 3 old ladies who run the Lady Travelers club but we see them from the POV of India, whose cousin has been lost by the club, and Derek (great nephew of Lady Blodgett), who is trying to help them since their club is fraudulent, but they're unrepentant and unhelpful

humouress Starts in 1889, 34 years after the prequel (provided at the end of this edition) which starts in 1855 and the 3 ladies‘ husbands were still alive (though travelling abroad). Derek must be Henry‘s and Celia‘s son. And Celia seems to have worked her way through 3 husbands in the meantime. (edited) 14mo
humouress So far (chapter 9) pointless banter (wittering), annoying characters, unlikely attraction (ie no basis for it) and improper behaviour (ie not in keeping for the period). Another one that I'm having to slog through.
(ch 11) It's not *bad* but not particularly interesting. Hovering at 2.5/5
{Looking at other posts, the 2nd half is supposed to be better.}

humouress 640 in 1889 would be equivalent to about (ce,000 (real value) now or 670,000 in relative value. (edited) 14mo
humouress A lot of repeating and reiterating things. Hammering an idea home in a waffling sort of way. Why write a sentence when a paragraph will do? 14mo
humouress (Ch20, 21) Finally becoming a page turner rather than a chore. I like Derek and his brother; the women in this book not so much. I'm not sure what Derek sees in India; I suspect he doesn't either.
I don't mean to slam this so much; I'm just bored and wandering away from it

So much fun! I really enjoyed this book and the three old ladies that run the society are a hoot. It took me a while to warm up to the main characters but they made up for it in the end.

While I'm going to make myself finish this because of work purposes, I don't recommend this book unless you like romances that are purely based on tropes and if you think that women exist only to orbit around the sphere of men. The main character has little of actual character and any that she does have disappears when she falls for the guy. Heteronormative standards are boring and the characters lack depth. So no.

Finished my first audiobook the other day. The narrator was amazing! The book itself was ok. The heroine was horrible to begin with but she developed as a character. The second half of the book was cute. Not sure if I'll continue the series...

It was a cute #romantsy and keep my attention through most of it. It did have some slow parts but it was a light #audiobook which was what I was looking for so it was a pick for me. #audible #historicalfiction #historicalromance

This had a lot of potential, but ended up being just kind of meh.

I am on a bit of a #romantsy kick so I apologize to those of you who are not fans of the genre. Parts of this book were so slow I almost bailed and parts were so charming I chuckled aloud. The second half is far better than the first half of the book but I am not sure I will continue on with the series. #melandprireadathon book three

Books 7+8 of #vacation came packaged in one volume. I have been drawn to this book for a while due to the gorgeous cover. While I loved the idea behind the story, I did not get as engrossed with the buildup of the romance as I would like. I think a lady travelers society could be a good setting for steampunk novels rather than romance, though the next one in the series is intriguing. The second story (Proper Way to Stop a Wedding) was just okay.

This book is a perfect lighthearted, romcom historical romance filled with witty banter that centers on ‘loosening‘ the very prim and proper heroine, Miss Pendergast. The twist is that it's set in Paris at the end of the 19th century. It starts out a little bit slow, but stick with it.
