Older, Faster, Stronger
Older, Faster, Stronger: What Women Runners Can Teach Us All About Living Younger, Longer | Margaret Webb
4 posts
One part personal quest to discover running greatness after age 50, one part investigation into what the women's running boom can teach athletes about becoming fitter, stronger, and faster as we age, Older, Faster, Stronger is an engrossing narrative sure to inspire women of all ages. A former overweight smoker turned marathoner, Margaret Webb runs with elite older women, follows a high-performance training plan devised by experts, and examines research that shows how endurance training can stall aging. She then tests herself against the world's best older runners at the world masters games in Torino, Italy. Millions of women have taken up running in recent decades--the first generation of women to train in great numbers. Women are qualifying for the Olympic marathon in their 50s, running 100-mile ultra marathons in their 60s, completing Ironmans in their 80s, competing for world masters records in their 90s. What are the secrets of these ageless wonders? How do they get stronger and faster long after their "athletic prime"? Is there an evolutionary reason women can maintain endurance into advanced years? Webb immerses herself in these questions as she as she trains to see just how fast she can get after 50.

Here are my round 2 #bookfitnesschallenge goals. I upped the weight training and added yoga and eating goals. I cannot remember the goals I put on the sign up form; they‘re probably different. #bfc

Megabooks Awesome!! #goteam! Those are fantastic goals! 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
cewilf Woohoo! I love how specific your goals are. I might follow suit and add to mine this week. You got this!! 6y
KathyWheeler @cewilf Thanks! I may have trouble with the swimming one because it‘s rainy season here in south Alabama and if there‘s thunder, all the pools get closed. 😞 But you never know; I could get lucky.😊 6y

KathyWheeler @Megabooks Thanks. I love the #goteam, so I‘ve adopted it. 6y
cewilf @KathyWheeler I hope you do! 🍀 My mother-in-law and brother-in-law are both from AL! I‘ve never been but hope to someday :) 6y
KathyWheeler @cewilf I hope you do get to visit. We don‘t get good press in the news because our government is always doing something stupid, but it‘s lovely here. 6y
Trashcanman You'll rock the shit out of those goals! 6y
KathyWheeler @Trashcanman Thanks! I hope so. 😊 6y
Trashcanman @KathyWheeler pardon the cussing. 6y

Emilymdxn #goteam I think we‘ve found our new name! I‘d love to go to Alabama, my parents went once and made it sound really worth going to! Impressed by all your goals, excited to work on all this together! 5y
rockpools Nice goals! I look at everyone‘s and think ‘I really should...‘ in this case get myself swimming. Ah well, one day! Looking forward to getting started now 😊 5y
KathyWheeler @RachelO I always think that too when I look at other people‘s goals. That‘s how weights & yoga ended up there. I could easily end up with so many goals that I couldn‘t meet them. 😄 5y
KathyWheeler @Emilymdxn I love our coast. Northern Alabama is pretty too, but I don‘t get there much. 5y
wanderinglynn Great goals! 🙌🏻 5y
LazyOwl Great goals. 5y

Happy World Book Day! This is one of my favorite books about running. Part memoir, part informational. It changed my running life!
