Mehso-so

This poetry collection was focused on the infamous Virginia hospital where patients were subjected to abuse and neglect as well as forced sterilizations through the 1960s. A harrowing situation to be certain, but the poems, often told through the eyes of one of the patients, still didn‘t seem to fully portray the terror and frustration many of these patients likely faced. 3⭐️

“This is what no one tells you about suffering
other people visit it upon you
and then
you visit it upon yourself”

This reminds me of a saying about how when someone hits you with an arrow in the back, do not then remove it and stab yourself in the chest by beating yourself up about it.

A good reminder to be kind to yourself.

It‘s finally nice enough to read outside!! ☀️🌿

I‘ve been having a hard time with novels and full length books this year so I‘m digging into some poetry. I‘m in love with the title of this collection and have always been fascinated by the history of Virginia State Colony.

azulaco This is on my TBR pile but I haven‘t read it yet. I‘m eager to find a slot for it. The subject matter fascinates me too. 7y
BookishFeminist @azulaco It‘s really great so far! It‘s a quick read even for poetry. I‘ve been fascinated by this former hospital since grad school bc it was the subject of a Supreme Court case that basically legalized eugenics. 😳 So many scary but interesting corners to peek into in our history. 7y
azulaco @BookishFeminist Oh wait, was this where Carrie Buck was? 😟 Or are you talking about a different case? I have done some reading on the subject of American eugenics and mental health. It‘s so sad and scary. 7y
BookishFeminist @azulaco Yep, this is where Carrie Buck was. Very sad. 7y

Pickpick

I was quite moved by this collection of historically-set poems about disability/institutionalization/eugenics, written by a talented young #ownvoices poet whose career I definitely now plan to follow. (I originally learned of her on Fresh Air, where she gave a lovely interview and read some poems from the book: http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/08/14/543362834/poet-imagines-life...

This is from a section called "In the Blind Room (Winter 1935)". According to the notes in the back, "blind room" was a term for solitary confinement. This poem is 3 pages, so I have to break it up into 3 posts.

I want to share this collection of poetry with you, but before I do that, I want to share the preface with you so that you can have some context. Eugenics was very real and horrific. #poetry #litsypoetry365
