Welcome to Litsy!

This poetry collection was focused on the infamous Virginia hospital where patients were subjected to abuse and neglect as well as forced sterilizations through the 1960s. A harrowing situation to be certain, but the poems, often told through the eyes of one of the patients, still didn‘t seem to fully portray the terror and frustration many of these patients likely faced. 3⭐️

“This is what no one tells you about suffering
other people visit it upon you
and then
you visit it upon yourself”

This reminds me of a saying about how when someone hits you with an arrow in the back, do not then remove it and stab yourself in the chest by beating yourself up about it.

A good reminder to be kind to yourself.

It‘s finally nice enough to read outside!! ☀️🌿

I‘ve been having a hard time with novels and full length books this year so I‘m digging into some poetry. I‘m in love with the title of this collection and have always been fascinated by the history of Virginia State Colony.

I was quite moved by this collection of historically-set poems about disability/institutionalization/eugenics, written by a talented young #ownvoices poet whose career I definitely now plan to follow.
