7 posts | 11 read | 13 to read
London 1851. With the opening of the Great Exhibition at hand, interest is mounting in the engineering triumphs of the railways, but not everyone feels like celebrating... In an audacious attack, the London to Birmingham mail train is robbed and derailed, causing many casualties. Planned with military precision, this crime proves a challenge to Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck who fights to untangle a web of murder, blackmail and destruction. As Colbeck closes in on the criminal masterminds, events take an unexpected turn when the beautiful Madeleine, daughter of the injured train driver, becomes a pawn in the criminals' game. With time running out, good and evil, new and old, battle against each other. But will the long arm of the law have speed on its side? Full of historical detail, The Railway Detective is an action-packed dip into murky 1850s London.

This Police procedural, first in a series,is set in 1851 UK, mostly on trains or in stations. The mail train from London to Birmingham is dramatically robbed of its gold coin enroute to a London bank, gravely injuring the engineer. DI.Colbeck,& his team are called to the scene to investigate. What follows is a fascinating hunt to find the responsible parties. The characters, their relationships,& their interplay adds to the fun.

First in the Detective Inspector Colbeck Mystery series there is little time to introduce the DI's sergeant or superior officer before a train is robbed at gun point and the investigation begins. It's 1851 and with all the action taking place around the UK and close to the railways this is a thoroughly enjoyable police procedural. The investigation is easy to follow, has good characters and is a nice relaxing cosy read with an element of suspense.

I love the Inspector Robert Colbeck Series, Colbeck is also known as The Railway Detective. All take place on trains, stations or connected to railways. #letstravelaugust

@Andrew65 Thank you for the recommendation as this was a fun and entertaining mystery to start my flight with.
Flight was delayed taking off as the oven wasn‘t working for the breakfast meals in first class so everyone had to wait until someone ran to the Bojangles and bought us chicken, sausage and bacon biscuits to go with our fruit. Chicken biscuit was quite tasty. They were able to make up a lot of the time so we weren‘t very late. 😁

Andrew65 Glad to hear you enjoyed it, I do love the characters in this series, and the books being set at the beginning of the Railway age. Sounds like an interesting start to your flight. 🤣 7y
mabell Bojangles would make every flight awesome! 😆 7y

Love the whole Railway Detective series, and enjoy my time spent with Inspector Robert Colbeck. Good historical mysteries, and love the interplay between the main characters. The series starts with The Railway Detective but all the books involve #trains #noteworthynovember

Tamra Sounds fun 7y
Andrew65 @Tamra They are, good light entertaining reads. 7y
Tamra @Andrew65 not a romance fan, is it limited? 7y

Andrew65 @Tamra The romance element is an incredibly limited part of it as I'm also not a romance fan. I think I'd even struggle to call it romance. Most of the time they are out of London and the daughter isn't even there. They are called to Murders all across the UK due to Colbeck's reputation as The Railway Detective. 7y
Tamra @Andrew65 yea! On TBR! 7y
Andrew65 @Tamra Yey! Be interested to see what you make of it. 7y
