The Antique House Murders
The Antique House Murders: The Oakwood Mystery Series | Leslie Nagel
5 posts | 7 read | 4 to read
In this irresistible cozy mystery from the author of The Book Club Murders, amateur sleuth Charley Carpenter fights to avenge a crime that hits far too close to home. Mulbridge House stood, silent and decaying, deep in the woods at the heart of Oakwood, Ohio, long before the passing of Augusta Mulbridge. Yet suddenly everyone in town seems to have a stake in its fate: the greedy heirs, eager to tear it down for a tidy profit; the local preservationists, determined to maintain it as an historic site; the angry neighbors, staunchly opposed to the construction of a modern subdivision. Even Charley Carpenter is forced to admit that her beloved shop, Old Hat Vintage Fashions, could use an infusion of the estates treasures. The clock is ticking. The wrecking ball is ready to swing. All that stands between Mulbridge House and oblivion is one final vote. That, and murder . . . The trouble begins when Charley walks into auctioneer Calvin Prescotts office to find her cherished family friend crumpled on the floor. Detective Marcus Trenault quickly connects his death to a string of increasingly violent burglaries plaguing Oakwood. But when Charley uncovers a link to a massive land swindle worth millions, not to mention a drug ring operating out of the manors abandoned outbuildings, that theory crumbles faster than Mulbridge House. Now Charleys racing to catch a killer before everything falls apart.

A cute and fun cozy mystery, but this one suffered a bit from the antics of your typical cozy heroine.
I enjoyed it; it was fun; but it did suffer from the “classic cozy heroine” escapades that come with the genre. I do enjoy reading cozy mysteries, but I do get frustrated with many of the situations our leading ladies end up in, and this one was no exception.
I received an eARC copy of the book.

The second book in the series, this was a good one. I didn't guess the murderer until shortly before the main character did. I did feel like yelling at her a couple of times for being stupid and rushing into danger. This is a series I would like to continue reading. Good characters and an interesting plot. 👍

minkyb There is something very cathartic about yelling at book characters from time to time! 7y

This #ARC is a pick because I like the characters & setting of this cozy mystery series but I did have things figured out way earlier than I like & thus had to yell at Charley to get her act together & solve it more than I care to admit.😬The 2nd book in the series, publishing on May 30th (start w/the 1st-I'll tag it below) & while I liked that one better, this one was still good & I'll read more. Paired w/my breakfast on this dark, rainy Sunday.

DebinHawaii In case you were wondering breakfast is leftover yellow rice, fried with a yolky egg & avocado with chai tea.😋🍴 8y

Impromptu auto shop wait today. My car has been hesitating when starting & today I actually thought it wouldn't so I called a shop I've used before & they are squeezing me in.😬Had my laptop with me so I can work & I never go anywhere without my e-book, tea & a granola bar or two so the basic needs are met.👍😆I may have to source food at some point if this turns into an all day endeavor which could be a bit of an adventure in this neighborhood...

RealLifeReading Good luck with the car! 8y
Cortg Good luck! I love how prepared you are 😉 8y
MemoirsForMe You are so well equipped! Hope your car is all fixed by now. 8y
DebinHawaii @RealLifeReading @Cortg @UwannaPublishme Thanks you guys! I would have done better but had to go while the car was running! 😆 It turned out to be the battery so more budget friendly than the starter or alternator. Yay! 👍 8y

You can't see what a rainy morning it was. Was because it's Hawaii & it seldom lasts for long, but still it was a good morning for a honey-cinnamon soy latte, my usual avocado toast with spicy garlic aioli & a few chapters of a cozy mystery before I get to working. This is the 2nd in a series, the #ARC from NetGalley. Happy Aloha Friday everyone! 🌴🍍🌺

BooksForEmpathy 😍😍😍 you just have the best breakfasts at that place!! 8y
booklover10 Has this book come out already? Why does it say May 30, 2017? 8y
DebinHawaii @BooksForEmpathy I do--although I fully plan to order other things when I get there and then I get seduced by the avocado toast yet again! 😋🍽😆 8y

DebinHawaii @booklover10 I am only a couple chapters in but enjoying it. The first in the series was good too if you have not read it yet. 📚👍 8y
