Anno was mentioned as a similar author in the Testa book, so I went and had a look. Anno died in 2020 at the age of 94, and yes, he was conscripted into the Japanese Imperial Army late in WW2, but wasn't sent overseas. Later, in the 60s he traveled around Europe, and those trips became the basis for his fine arts and children's book careers. His art is lush and brimming with detail. The books contain no words, inviting storytelling & questions.

willaful My daughter adored Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar as a small child. Now she's studying calculus. I hope Anno would be pleased. 😁 2y
Faranae @willaful I think he would be, looking at his more mathematically inclined fine art. Lots of very Escher-like things in there. 2y

#WanderingJune Day 1: Mitsumasa Anno clearly used to be #BigInJapan. The Author‘s note explains that Anno was deeply fascinated by Europe and spent most of his time in 1963 and in 1975 just exploring various parts of Europe – painting as he travels from one city to the next. Talk about a traveling artist! My review of this fascinating wordless book: https://wp.me/pDlzr-5Hl
