A powerful firsthand account of the Stonewall riots and the birth of the modern gay rights movement We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truthsthat all of us are created equalis the star that guides us still, just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall. President Obama, 2013 Inaugural Address In the summer of 1969, the Stonewall Inn, one of the few places where gay men could gather, was a mafia-run unlicensed bar in New York Citys Greenwich Village. An unforeseen raid on the night of June 28 by federal agents ignited the now-famous five days of Stonewall riots that kindled the nations gay rights movement. Expertly weaving personal, eyewitness accounts of the riots, Martin Dubermans Stonewall is an engrossing look at how six individuals, from distinctly different backgrounds, helped bring political and social awakening to the gay liberation movement.

So I want to take a quick moment to thank @ChasingOm and @Emilymdxn for this project! I have tried to be more aware of the authors that I support, and I hope to make that something I develop even more in the new year.

That said, I‘ve become more and more interested in the history of the queer community, and I think this was an important moment.

ChasingOm This sounds like a great one! 4y

Pickpick

A good book about some of the early days of gay activism and one of the most visible and well known turning points from quiet and hidden to loud and highly visible. This book covers some of the organizations that came and went from the mid 60s to the early 70s. It‘s an important history to read and know. My copy is from 94 so a little dated, but I googled the 5 people who were focused on, only 2 are still alive.

No walk for me today 😞 I fell in the shower yesterday thankfully I did NOT hit my head. I did however jam my back a bit. And I hit my arm on the rim. I‘m sure I could get through a short walk, but I‘m going to stay on the safe side and stay on my couch and read today. #bfc

Mehso-so

This book was a struggle to get through, but incredibly in-depth. If you're studying LGBT history, or want to know anything and everything about the people involved in the Stonewall Riots, this book is for you. Anyone looking for a casual run through should probably avoid this one. 3/5 stars.
