English Is Not Easy
English Is Not Easy: A Visual Guide to the Language | Luci Gutiérrez
5 posts | 1 read | 3 to read
A cheeky, sophisticated, and strikingly illustrated guide that leaves generic English reference books in the dust When prominent Barcelona-based illustrator Luci Gutiérrez found herself tuning out in English class, she used her love of drawing to help retain what she’d learned. Ditching the kind of bland and useless phrases that fill most English textbooks, Gutiérrez uses whimsical characters, cheeky dialogue, and even insults to bring vocabulary, grammar, and usage topics to life. Nearly forty-seven million people in the United States speak a language other than English at home, and even most native speakers struggle with subtle distinctions, such as when to use “whether” as opposed to “if.” (For example: I wonder whether I should have added a little more poison to his tea.) Already published to wide acclaim abroad, English Is Not Easy is sure to delight grammar mavens and students of English in America.

kamoorephoto One of the hardest languages, they say. The proof is in the pudding from even those who say they speak the language. 6y

Cool, fun, colorful book that does not help me to learn English 😂

Pickpick

Starting my #fourdayweekend #readathon with a quick read. I enjoyed reading the explanations of English from a non-native perspective. The pictures and example sentences were funny, but at times explicit... so not a book to be donated to the school library or an English teacher colleague. It's a shame too because some of the grammar explanations are quite good.

(My apologies for the crappy #catsoflitsy pic)

Lmstraubie Enjoy your long weekend! 8y

Sace @Riveted_Reader_Melissa thank you! Just be warned about some of the pictures. But I admit I'm a little bit of a prude. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Sace See, now that makes me even more interested, LOL. Curiosity is a dangerous thing.😉 8y
Sace @Riveted_Reader_Melissa The pictures weren't gratuitous. They really did go with the context. I understood what she was doing I do G and PG rated cheeky sentences in my Spanish class too because it makes it more interesting. I just hate that I can't share the book with students. But I'm glad I can on Litsy. 😊 8y
Reviewsbylola Enjoy your readathon! I'm jealous. 8y
