Edge of Eternity
Edge of Eternity: Book Three of The Century Trilogy | Ken Follett
Ken Folletts Century Trilogy follows the fortunes of five intertwined familiesAmerican, German, Russian, English, and Welshas they make their way through the twentieth century. It has been called potent, engrossing (Publishers Weekly) and truly epic (Huffington Post). USA Today said, You actually feel like youre there.Edge of Eternity, the finale, covers one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the 1960s through the 1980s, encompassing civil rights, assassinations, Vietnam, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolutionand rock and roll.East German teacher Rebecca Hoffman discovers shes been spied on by the Stasi for years and commits an impulsive act that will affect her family for generations George Jakes, himself bi-racial, bypasses corporate law to join Robert F. Kennedys Justice Department and finds himself in the middle of not only the seminal events of the civil rights battle, but also a much more personal battle Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is much more dangerous than hed imagined Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Khrushchev, becomes an agent for good and for ill as the Soviet Union and the United States race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tania, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsawand into history. These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as they add their personal stories and insight to the most defining events of the 20th century. From the opulent offices of the most powerful world leaders to the shabby apartments of those trying to begin a new empire, from the elite clubs of the wealthy and highborn to the passionate protests of a countrys most marginalized citizens, this is truly a drama for the ages. With the Century Trilogy, Follett has guided readers through an entire era of history with a masters touch. His unique ability to tell fascinating, brilliantly researched stories that captivate readers and keep them turning the pages is unparalleled. In this climactic and concluding saga, Follett brings us into a world we thought we knew, but now will never seem the same again.

Did I like this? Yes. Did this series really need this third book? Probably not. I'm still giving it a pick though.

I'm trying to get through some chunksters instead of reading a butt load of shorter books. I was slightly horrified by my book total last year (393). But it's going to be hard to stay away from the poetry so this may be a big fail.

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks I'm really working a lot on my #AlmostaChunkster list this year - I seem to have sooo many books in that 500-800pg range, too long for me to want to pick up, too short to get that “I read a REAL book feeling“ 😂 3y
vlwelser @TheAromaofBooks 800+ is my goal with this. You know, in addition to the book clubs and buddy reads and ARCs. I try not to think about it, actually. 3y

I thought this was a good conclusion to the series. As always though, I rolled my eyes through the sex scenes, particularly when Follett tried to write from a woman's point view.

This was the 3rd and last book in Ken Follett's Century Trilogy. Not since his Kingsbridge series have I enjoyed a series this much.
This must be one of the best history series I've ever read. It starts in the months leading up to WWI and ends with the Berlin wall coming down.
Phenomenal writing. 5 stars!

perfectsinner Just finished the Kingsbridge trilogy last month. I've heard many good things about the Century trilogy as well. May try it in the future! Follett is great. 5y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @perfectsinner Apparently there's another book coming out in September in the Kingsbridge series. How great is that? 5y
perfectsinner @Yoricke_SouthAfrica
Yes, The Evening & The Morning. I'm looking forward to it, but I probably won't read it for a while. I'd like to read reviews and see if it's worth it, especially as it's $35, which is kind of expensive to me. So I will probably hold off and wait & see. Regardless, always looking forward to more Follett.

I've started the 3rd and last book in Ken Follet's Century Trilogy. I can't stress enough how brilliant this series is. I have gained so much knowledge about WWI until WWII. Brilliant writing.

Buechersuechtling I perfectly understand your view. I listened to the audiobooks just recently and liked them very much. Although I must say that the first one was the most impressive to me. Hope you enjoy it furthermore. Happy Sunday and happy reading to you‼️ 5y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @Buechersuechtling I'm about a quarter into the 3rd book, and I'm still absolutely loving this series. It is such an eye opener for me. To really get a full view of Britain's and America's role in WWII. Happy reading and stay safe and healthy 🙏 5y

When your #thriftbooks order comes, you‘re excited, you open it and then.....realize it‘s twice as small ((with teeny, tiny print)) as your other copies of the trilogy!!!!! My Virgo ♍️is really kicking in. I hate when my books don‘t match in series! Does anyone else feel this way?? 🤦🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️👎🏻🙄🤯🤬🥺😩🧐😒 #firstworldproblems #shouldhavereadthefineprint #nowonderitwascheap

RamsFan1963 @MoonWitch94 Yes I like my series books to all be the same. I had to wait an extra year to get the last book in Harry Turtledove's Hot War series because the first two books came in paperback but the 3rd came out in hardback. So annoying!! 5y
MoonWitch94 @RamsFan1963 Yes!!! I had to wait years to read this series bc I wanted paperback, not hardcover. They won‘t even fit next to each other on the shelf 😩 I guess I will have to buy another copy later. 5y
TheAromaofBooks I used to shop on eBay when I wanted a specific edition because there were actual photographs, but now so many different groups are selling there that just post stock photos and can't/won't answer questions about the edition - makes me sad because I really like to get ones that match! 5y
Scochrane26 Yes, I hate when my books don‘t match. The only set I have that doesn‘t match is HP & that‘s for sentimental reasons-the 6th & 7th were the only ones I pre-ordered after I got into the series. 5y
MoonWitch94 @TheAromaofBooks Oh that bites! You would think eBay would be a place where they HAD to list specific edition info. @Scochrane26 I have some that don‘t match for similar reasons! It‘s good to know I‘m not the only one. 💚 5y

Distorting to rate this one immediately after finishing it. I mean, the fall of the Berlin Wall _is_ moving.

I very much liked how Follett showed the different parties. I didn‘t have much history in school, so I found the Soviet part especially interesting. Same for the US history.

I was puzzled but impressed how Follett showed that (lack of) money played an important role in German Unification.

How come that I didn‘t have the idea of combining this cover with the mosaic overlay to create the impression of a wall that Mr Gorbachev later in this audiobook surely will be addressed to tear down❓😉 *)

Am I the only one who feels that after a long period of dealing with the 60s the part where are forwards describes 1984-87 is a bit rushed❓ During the last 10-15 minutes keeping step with what he describes got harder.

*) And that today. 🤭

Texreader I didn‘t care for the third book. 5y
Buechersuechtling @Texreader I felt like that towards the second book. But in here I like the spotlight on the civil rights movement in the US and the Soviet view of the events. 5y

🎈 How cool‼️😃😍

I didn‘t know that.

I mean, I did know that somewhere in October it would be my third year here on Litsy but I really didn‘t remember that I set up my account on Germany‘s Unification Day 🎂. 😂

Thank you for congratulating and reminding me of that, @HappyLitsyversary ‼️

Feels ironic that I research about the relationship between Bobby Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, thus US-American history 🇺🇸, on German Unification Day 🇩🇪.
I‘m celebrating all by myself with recouping.

Here, the weather isn‘t very festive but I wish all my German fellow Littens a wonderful day!🎈I‘m glad that the Wall is gone. But I‘d be even more happier if we all (➕ our politicians) would remember common values instead of differences.

Here I can do what I before couldn‘t. I can (try to) fit my parents‘ and my grandparents‘ memories and stories of that time into what Follet tells.

After volume one I had high hopes I could do so already in volume two but I couldn‘t.

After having been so disappointed of volume two, “Winter of the World”, I am really surprised how much I like this final one. Not that there are considerably fewer erotical scenes and I additionally slowly reach the stadium where I begin to lose overview over some characters – but I like it. I have a more seamless impression of it than I already at that point (3,5 hours) had of volume two.

My expectations towards this final volume are understandably a bit subdued.

After I after the first volume was very happy about how appropriate each book title is I here certainly know very well what will happen.

Let‘s see how Follett does “his job” if I have my own memories I can consult about the presented piece of history.

About three and a half hours left of “Winter of the World”. So I‘m not sure how long that second audiobook will last. And that‘s why I once again took advantage of my significant other‘s brilliant internet connection to download the third volume of the “Titans”-saga. If I finish the second volume fast tomorrow, I will have something to continue. 😃

I‘m not completely convinced by “Winter of the World” but wanna find out if the final is worth it.

Got to the end of the third book of the Century trilogy, quite easily despite over the thousand pages. I liked the take on the Cold War, the view from inside the Soviet Union, and how it all fell down. But also the civil rights battle and all the US Presidents perspective on the back of the Vietnam war is really worth the reading. Few more pages and this last book could have covered till the very end of Century. #2019

Wow, this was bad. The characters were so flat. There was nothing interesting about them. The whole story seemed rather biased along the cold war lines of how to talk about East and West. What a disappointment. Overall, I would recommend to read the first book of the trilogy and leave the rest alone.

With the final book of the century trilogy, Follett covers the 1950s through the 1980s... Obama‘s inauguration is only handled in a short epilogue. The book describes the 1960s in minute detail, while the rest just gotten a cursory glance. Also, he is telling the story of the 20th century by following the lives of five intertwined families and clearly that will feel highly constructed eventually.

Louise I found the section on the Freedom Riders very interesting. It was like getting an inside view of that movement. 7y

I got in just under the line for January with this one. Unfortunately, this was really a disappointing last book in this trilogy. I found it contrived and full of unlikable characters who just did terrible things to each other. There was way too much Cold War Era Russian politics which just doesn't interest me. One 🌟 on this one for me.

I lay awake all night listening to the conclusion of this third book in Ken Follett's Century Trilogy. It was exciting to have reached the years that I remember from childhood. Especially poignant was the fall of the Berlin Wall. My German cousins were in the crowd that greeted the East Germans as they crossed over into the west. The book ends with the historic election of Barack Obama. I learned a lot from this excellent trilogy. Now I can sleep!

Mollyanna Wow! How great to know someone who was there on the day the wall came down. It must have been so interesting to hear them talk about it. Enjoy your sleep. 7y
