When Gravity Fails
When Gravity Fails | George A Effinger
5 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
In a futuristic Middle East, plug-ins can turn anyone into a killer in this wry and black and savage Nebula and Hugo award finalist (George R. R. Martin). Set in a high-tech near future featuring an ascendant Muslim world and divided Western superpowers, this cult classic takes us into a world with mind- or mood-altering drugs for any purpose, brains enhanced by electronic hardware with plug-in memory additions and modules offering the wearer new personalities, and bodies shaped to perfection by surgery. Marid Audran, an unmodified and fairly honest street hustler, lives in a decadent Arab ghetto, the Budayeen, and holds on tight to his cherished independence. Then, against his best instincts, he becomes involved in a series of inexplicable murders. Some seem like routine assassinations, carried out with an old-fashioned handgun by a man wearing a plug-in James Bond persona; others, involving whores, feature prolonged torture and horrible mutilations. Soon the problem comes to the attention of Budayeen godfather Friedlander Beywho makes Audran an offer he cant refuse. Nominated for the Nebula and Hugo awards, the highest honors in the genre, When Gravity Fails, which introduced the cyberpunk Budayeen Cycle, is a pioneering work the Denver Post called superior science fiction and Harlan Ellison described as crazy as a spider on ice skates . . . plain old terrific.

Mehso-so

I‘m pretty sure my ambivalence about this one is me and not the book but I really just can‘t get into hard boiled detective stories even in a sci fi world. I picked this up because of the SFFBC on goodreads and I think the best part of that is exposing yourself to things you‘d normally never read on your own. So even though this wasn‘t quite for me I‘m glad I read it.

#BookReport
This week I managed to finally finish my traditional read as well as another audiobook. My massive #audiogaming marathon continues into next week and then I should hopefully have more time for traditional reads again.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finish the Shadow Campaigns series and make headway into my CalibreRoulette pick. If I have more time I'll probably start on my neglected BookSpin selection.

RamsFan1963 What do you think of When Gravity Fails? Its been awhile since I read it, but I remember enjoying it very much. 3y
HeyT I haven't really gotten that far into it yet but it reminds me of neuromancer a bit and I kind of bounced off that hard. BUT I'm willing to see what happens and I very well may change my outlook as I get deeper into it. 3y

“Haven't you ever noticed that #equal amounts of pain and joy are not, in fact, #equal in duration? Pain drags on until you wonder if life will ever be bearable again; pleasure, though, once it's reached its peak, fades faster than a trodden gardenia, and your memory searches in vain for the sweet scent.”

The mystery in this Cyberpunk-noir is its weakest link. The world building is fantastic though, #setintheMiddleEast in a future where you can slot different personalities into the back of your head, Marid Audran must track down a brutal killer in his gritty neighborhood, the Budayeen.

Especially interesting was how Islamic culture has adapted in a world where gender reassignment is a quick, cheap procedure. First in a trilogy. #MayBookFlowers
