A Walk Across the Sun
A Walk Across the Sun | Corban Addison
12 posts | 17 read | 16 to read
Corban Addison's debut novel, A Walk Across the Sun, made waves when it was first published, called "pulse-revving with a serious message," by O, the Oprah magazine. John Grisham said, "Addison has written a novel that is beautiful in its story and also important in its message. A Walk Across The Sun deserves a wide audience." A trained lawyer committed to the cause of advancing international human rights and abolishing modern slavery, Addison has written a novel that enlightens while it entertains; A Walk Across the Sun brings together three of Addison's great passions--storytelling, human rights, and the world's many cultures. Ahalya Ghai and her younger sister Sita are as close as sisters can be. But when a tsunami rips through their coastal village, their home is swept away, and the sisters are the sole survivors of their family. Destitute, their only hope is to find refuge at a convent many miles away. A driver agrees to take them. But the moment they get into that car their fate is sealed. The two sisters--confused, alone, totally reliant on each other--are sold. On the other side of the world, Washington lawyer Thomas Clarke is struggling to cope after the death of his baby daughter and the collapse of his marriage. He takes a sabbatical from his high-pressure job and accepts a position with the Bombay branch of an international anti-trafficking group. Thomas is now on a desperate path to try and save not only himself and his marriage, but also the lives of the two sisters. From the Trade Paperback edition.

And our shadows fall
Upon the dial of time
In names spoken by the light
That gives us birth."

I found this gem at the dollar store. I heard about it earlier this year, and since then I‘ve been looking for it. Of all the places to find it. lol Doesn‘t it have a gorgeous cover?

MidnightBookGirl It is gorgeous! I grew up a huge fan of Christopher Pike's YA thrillers, and one of my favorite bookish memories was finding his first adult novel, Sati, at the dollar store. It was 91 or 92, so before the Internet was a thing, so I didn't even know the book had been written. Great books for a steal are an awesome surprise! 7y

kendrastephaniekaryn @suzze I'm SO in if you are. 8y
Suzze @kendrastephaniekaryn Absolutely! And, in pulling it off the shelf, I realized I was much worse than I thought about reading this. It is an advance copy. And the book came out in January 2012. So I have had it more than 5 years! Let me know when you want to start. 8y
Suzze After getting this off the shelf, I decided to read a couple of pages. 50 pages later, I'm hooked. Don't know if you have time to start now, but I don't think I can stop! LOL 8y
kendrastephaniekaryn @Suzze I'll start as soon as I'm done my current read then! Haha. I'm a quick reader so I think I'll be able to catch up. Glad to hear that it's addicting. 8y
Suzze @kendrastephaniekaryn I'm a quick reader, but I'm reading four books right now. 😳 8y

The strong female characters in this book were terrific & had me rooting for them from the first page. The topic of human trafficking is hard to read about but the author is able to communicate the disturbing scope of the issue w/o providing gratuitous detail. And it manages to be uplifting as well!
