Colonial Spirits
Colonial Spirits: A Toast to Our Drunken History | Steven Grasse
2 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
In Colonial Spirits, Steven Grasse presents a historical manifesto on drinking, including 50 colonial era- inspired cocktail recipes. The book features a rousing timeline of colonial imbibing and a cultural overview of a dizzying number of drinks: beer, rum and punch; temperance drinks; liqueurs and cordials; medicinal beverages; cider; wine, whiskey, and bourbon--all peppered with liquored-up adages from our founding fathers. There is also expert guidance on DIY methods for home brewing. Imbibe your way through each chapter, with recipes like the Philadelphia Fish House Punch (a crowd pleaser!) and Snakebites (drink alone!). Hot beer cocktails and rattle skulls have never been so completely irresistible.

I really enjoyed *Colonial Spirits* . The illustrations, the history, the recipes, even the author‘s brand of humor. IMO, presenting history w/ humor doesn‘t always succeed but Grasse does. Some recipes I‘ll never try, such as dandelion wine or those w/ powdered wormwood, but many cocktails look great! And I‘m seriously tempted to try making cherry bounce and store it away in a closet for 6 months. Now where to put this, w/cookbooks or w/history?

ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen I love them too, so whimsical. 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano they saved the best for the last chapter 😊 ! I‘m a bourbon fan myself, although I only discovered it in the past couple years! 3y
