#MayCharacters Day 25 #Meek
Mary Robinson, the maid referred to, is a very beautiful shepherdess, of gentle character, who dislikes the attention her appearance generates.

Based on a true story, the maid is tricked into marriage with a bigamist fraudster.

This is my favourite Melvyn Bragg book, I have not read them all but I have read this one twice. It is based on a real 19th century scandal. It is set in the English Lake District of Cumbria and captures the atmospheric conditions so well.
