My very favourite thing about K.J. Charles is how completely she invites the reader in. Her characters are always complex people involved in complex situations, often with a mystery component that gives one plenty to chew on. In AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION, a neuroatypical lodging house keeper and a taxidermist fall for one another just as murder, arson, and Dark Secrets crash into their lives, and it's great on every level.

I planned to take a little KJ Charles break before I dove into the Sins of the Cities series, but I opened AN UNSEEN ATTRACTION just to take a peek and the next thing I knew I'd read half the first chapter.

Then Theodore, one of my local rabbits, came along and distracted me. Rabbits, man.

Clem Talleyfer has a crush on Mr.Green , one of the lodgers in the boardinghouse Clem manages. But just as their romance makes a promising, and sexy, start: murder, arson and torture by a nasty thug leads to a lot of stress in their relationship. Not as funny as her Zenda story, but I still enjoyed it. Warning ⚠️ there are very explicit sexy times 🔥 m/m #romantsy.

This was my first KJ Charles book (though it seems like everyone who reads romance loves her), and now I think I might have to go read all of her other ones. Because this was both a compelling romance (with a neurodivergent lead!) and a really cool mashup of genres. It is, all at once: 1) a Queer Historical Romance, 2) a Victorian Sensationalist Novel, and 3) a Mystery. The combination works surprisingly well.

I did nooot mean to read this all in one go. Clem is so adorable, though. And though I'm not interested in the sex scenes for their own sake, the passion and emotion between the characters is lovely, and I appreciate that it isn't formulaic tab A slot B acts either.

Don‘t mind me I‘m just flailing over here because of my feelings. This m/m romance is full of discussion about disability and diversity as well as abuse. I really enjoyed the little bit of mystery while still being focused on the romance. 4/5
